Baseball Takes Series In 9-2 Win Over Northwestern

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Omaha baseball used a fifth-inning surge and propelled itself over Northwestern, 9-2, for the series win over the Wildcats Saturday afternoon at Camelback Ranch.

The victory also marks the second-straight year Omaha has won a series over Northwestern, with the last being in its 2018 season-opening weekend at Camelback ranch.

LEADERS FOR OMAHA
Saturday starter, Spencer Koelewyn tossed 3.0 innings of shutout ball with five strikeouts, three hits and four walks allowed. Easton Smith (1-0) earned the win with 4.0 innings in relief with a strikeout, one run and four hits allowed. Keil Krumwiede also saw 2.0 innings of work with three strikeouts to close out the game with one hit and one walk allowed.

Behind the plate, Masen Prososki went 2-for-5 with four RBI, a triple and a run against the Wildcats. Breyden Eckhout had two doubles on a 2-for-5 performance with an RBI and a run. Brett Bonar also registered an RBI (1-for-5). Harrison Denk went 2-for-5 with two runs and a stolen base, while Parker Smejkal (2-for-5, double) and Chris Esposito (2-for-4, double) also registered multi-hit performances.

INSIDE THE INNINGS
Northwestern struck first in the bottom of the fourth on a double to left field. Omaha, however, exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth and made it 6-1. Four-consecutive errors by the Wildcats sparked the Maverick momentum. After Grant Goldston and Esposito reached on errors, Lombardi bunted and saw the Wildcats commit its third error. That scored Goldston for an unearned run and evened it at 1-all. The fourth Wildcat error in the frame scored Esposito and made it 2-1 Mavericks.

A Prososki single, an Eckhout double, a Smejkal single and a Bonar fielder's choice gave Omaha a 6-1 lead over the Wildcats. Later on in the top of the eighth, Prososki tripled and scored three Mavericks to build on the lead, 9-1. Northwestern scored a run in the bottom of the eighth, but Omaha was able to cruise in the final inning for the seven-run win.
