Smallidge, Mavericks Have Big Night in 10-2 Win Over No. 17 Broncos

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha hockey team got goals from nine different players in rolling to a 10-2 win over No. 17 Western Michigan to earn their first win of the season.

Junior defenseman Jason Smallidge led the attack, scoring a goal and adding four assists as 14 different players notched points.  His assist and point totals tied school records and the point total tied an NCHC record.

Chayse Primeau had the game-winning goal and two assists while freshman Matt Miller had two goals and an assist.  In all, eight different players had multiple-point nights.

The Mavericks improved to 1-1-0 and 1-1-0-0/0 in the NCHC while the Broncos dipped to 0-2-0 and 0-2-0-0/0.

INSIDE THE FIRST PERIOD
The Mavericks carried the play early and broke the scoreless deadlock when Miller knocked in the rebound of his own shot for his first collegiate goal at 11:14.

Just 1:02 later, the Broncos tied the game when Cole Gallant fired a wrist shot from the left wing past Isaiah Saville.

INSIDE THE SECOND PERIOD
The Mavericks took the lead back on an odd-man rush early in the second.  Martin Sundberg slipped the puck to Jack Randl who hammered home his second goal of the year just 1:18 into the period.

Primeau stretched the lead with his first of the season, chipping the puck over Broncos' goalie Austin Cain at 6:33.

Western Michigan closed the gap when Ethen Frank scored on a power play at 9:59, but Kevin Conley restored the lead at 14:02.  He broke in off the right wing and roofed the puck for his first of the season.

INSIDE THE THIRD PERIOD
The Mavericks poured it on in the third, getting goals from Joey Abate and Nolan Sullivan 39 seconds apart early to make it 6-2.  Smallidge got his goal at 8:30 and followed with an assist on Nate Knoepke's goal just 25 seconds later to complete his five-point night.

Sundberg scored late for his second of the year, and Miller tallied his second of the game with 1:17 remaining as the Mavericks tied the second-highest goal total in school history.

Saville picked up the win in goal with 24 saves.

The Mavericks are back on the ice on Saturday, Dec. 5 when they take on Miami at 4:05 p.m.  UNO will be the designated home team.

GAME NOTES:
  • The Mavericks fell one goal short of tying the school record for goals in a game.  They earned an 11-7 win over Miami on Jan. 12, 2018.
  • The last Maverick to notch five points in a game was David Pope who had a goal and four assists in the record-setting win over Miami.
  • The last Maverick to register four assists in a game was Teemu Pulkkinen who had four against Arizona State in an 8-4 win on Dec. 22, 2019.
  • Randl, Sullivan and Sundberg all have scored in both Omaha games this season.
  • Freshman defenseman Nolan Krenzen registered his first collegiate point with an assist on Miller's second goal.
  • Smallidge, Knoepke and Brandon Scanlin all finished +5 for the game.
  • The Mavericks outshot the Broncos, 44-26.
  • The Mavericks were the designated away team for the game, wearing their black road jerseys and playing from the away bench at Baxter Arena.
