Mavericks Drop Pod Opener to UMD, 5-3

OMAHA, Neb. – No. 3 Minnesota Duluth scored four goals in the third period to earn a 5-3 win over the Omaha hockey team in the first game of the NCHC Pod at Baxter Arena on Tuesday.

Martin Sundberg and Jack Randl each had a goal and an assist for the Mavericks who were playing their first of four games in six days to open pod play.

INSIDE THE FIRST PERIOD
The Mavericks spotted the Bulldogs the early lead when Koby Bender scored at 1:52 of the first.

Omaha tied the game just after the first power play expired.  Nolan Sullivan deflected home a pass from Sundberg at 6:38 to tie the game.

Sundberg then gave the Mavericks the lead at 15:03.  He deflected in a shot from Kirby Proctor in the waning seconds of a power play to make it 2-1.

INSIDE THE SECOND PERIOD
The Bulldogs started fast, but the Mavericks largely kept them from any good scoring chances.  UNO pushed back later in the period and the shots were tied 8-8 by the intermission.

INSIDE THE THIRD PERIOD
The Bulldogs cashed in on a 5-on-3 power play just 1:03 into the third to tie it.  Jackson Cates fired through traffic to tie the game at two.

UMD then got goals from Kobe Roth and Noah Cates less than five minute apart to build a 4-2 lead.

Jack Randl scored his first collegiate goal with 1:08 to go in the period, converting a nifty pass from Tyler Weiss to make it 4-3.  But Hunter Lellig scored into an empty net just 12 seconds later to seal the win.

The Mavericks resume play in the pod on Thursday, Dec. 3 against Western Michigan at 7:35 p.m.  Omaha is the designated away team for the game.
