Mavericks Skate to 2-2 Draw with Maine

ORONO, Maine – The Omaha hockey team played to a 2-2 tie with Maine on Friday night in the first game between the two programs in more than 21 years.

Freshman Austin Roden made a team season- high 46 saves including 43 over the last two periods and overtime to preserve the deadlock and help the Mavericks improve to 6-3-2 in non-conference play.

The Mavericks are now 8-8-3 on the season while the Black Bears, who remained unbeaten at Alfond Arena this season, are 9-8-4.

Omaha led 2-1 entering the third period, but Maine tied the game when Tim Doherty scored his second of the night with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle at 4:13.

Both teams had good chances to break the tie in the closing stretches, Maine with the best when it got its fourth power play of the game with less than two minutes to go in regulation.

The Mavericks dominated the first period with strong attack zone time and a 19-5 shot advantage.  Maine goalie Jeremy Swayman got them all except for a rebound put-back by Kevin Conley at 12:16.  Taylor Ward and Joey Abate picked up assists.

Maine tied the game on a power play at 8:36 of the second.  With Ward lost for a five-minute major and a game misconduct, Doherty fired home his eighth of the year to make it 1-1.

But the Mavericks used a power play of their own to retake the lead.  Just 11 seconds into the man advantage, Ryan Brushett tipped the puck past Swayman for his first collegiate goal at 10:07.

Swayman was equally stout for Maine, making 41 saves as the Black Bears outshot the Mavericks, 48-43.

The two teams face a quick turnaround, meeting on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT in Portland, Maine.
