PORTLAND, Maine – The Maine hockey team scored a goal with 2:44 remaining to beat the Omaha hockey team, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Cross Insurance Arena.
The Mavericks, who had tied the Black Bears 2-2 the previous night in Orono, Maine, thoroughly outplayed their hosts for long stretches of the game but suffered their ninth loss of the season and are now 8-9-3 overall. Maine improved to 10-8-4.
The game winner came just seconds after the Mavericks had pinned Maine into its own end for several minutes, buzzing the Black Bears' net. But Tim Doherty fed Eduards Tralmaks who had slipped behind the Mavericks' defense. He stuffed a shot past the outstretched leg of UNO's
Austin Roden for his second of the game.
The Mavericks pulled Roden for more than two minutes but could not score the equalizer with an extra attacker.
Roden was sturdy for the second straight game, stopping 24 of 27 shots. He finished the weekend with 70 saves.
Maine's Jeremy Swayman made 32 saves and helped the Black Bears blunt six UNO power plays.
The Mavericks scored first for the second straight game.
John Schuldt collected a drop pass from
Ryan Brushett and wired home his first collegiate goal at 14:50 of the first period.
Kevin Conley earned the second assist.
Maine tied the game at 10:01 of the second period when Samuel Rennaker came out of the penalty box, took a pass and raced in on a breakaway. He put back his own rebound to make it 1-1.
The Black Bears got their first lead of the game 3:18 later when Tralmaks converted over a sprawling
Austin Roden.
But the Mavericks tied the game at 16:29.
Tristan Keck fired home the rebound of a shot by
Martin Sundberg for his fourth goal of the year.
The Mavericks return to NCHC play with a two-game series at No. 1 North Dakota on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 10-11.
