COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Omaha hockey team picked up its first series sweep since opening weekend, beating Colorado College 4-1 on Saturday night at Broadmoor World Arena.
The Mavericks earned six points in the NCHC standings with the win and Friday's 6-4 victory. They improved to 11-10-5 overall and 5-6-3-0/0 in the NCHC, good for fifth place. The Tigers dropped to 8-13-1 overall and 3-10-1-0/0 in the conference, putting them eighth.
As with Friday's game, the Mavericks spotted the Tigers the lead, although this one just a one-goal advantage on a goal by Nick Halloran at 5:40 of the second period.
The Mavericks countered at 12:37 when
Tristan Keck's wrister from just inside the blue line found its way inside the left post for his sixth of the year.
Kevin Conley gave UNO the lead less than two minutes later. He scooped up the rebound of a shot by
Dean Stewart and threw it over Tigers' goaltender Matt Vernon at 14:20.
The dagger came in the last minute of the middle period.
Nolan Sullivan came out of the penalty box and took a pin-point feed from
Nate Knoepke. Sullivan raced in alone and fired a hard shot past Vernon to make it 3-1 after two.
In the third, the Mavericks gave CC few opportunities and added an insurance goal at 13:40 when
John Schuldt's shot from the left point found the net for his second of the year.
Isaiah Saville, who was chased out of the game on Friday after allowing three goals on eight shots, was sharp in goal, making 38 saves. Vernon finished with 29 for the Tigers.
The Mavericks return home to host Western Michigan on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
GAME NOTES:
- The series marked Omaha's first sweep since beating Alaska Anchorage in December of 2018. It was their first NCHC sweep since taking two from Western Michigan on Jan. 26-27, 2018.
- The Mavericks are now unbeaten in their last four games (2-0-2), their longest unbeaten streak of the season.
- The Mavericks are above .500 for the first time since Dec. 6.
- Omaha killed off all eight Colorado College power plays in the game and turned aside 14 of 15 CC man advantages for the weekend (93.3 percent). Dating back to their series with Denver, the Mavericks have allowed just two power play goals in 23 times shorthanded (91.3 percent).
- The Mavericks improved to 17-9-5 against Colorado College all-time including a mark of 9-6-1 in Colorado Springs.
