Mavericks Drop Series Opener To Broncos, 5-2

OMAHA, Neb. – Western Michigan got two goals from Wade Allison to push past the Omaha hockey team, 5-2, in the weekend series opener on Friday night at Baxter Arena.

Kevin Conley and Nolan Sullivan scored power play goals in the third period for the Mavericks, but they could not get any closer, dropping to 11-11-5 overall and 5-7-3-0/0 in the NCHC.  They are tied with St. Cloud State for fifth.

The Broncos improved to 12-9-4 overall and 8-5-2-0/2 in the conference, tying them with Denver for third.  Western Michigan is now unbeaten in six games (5-0-1).

The Broncos got out to a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals by Kale Bennett at 1:36 and Allison at 12:39.

Western Michigan added to its lead late in the second period when Cole Gallant finished off the rebound of a shot by Josh Passolt at 18:15.

The Mavericks got on the board during a power play early in the third.  Kevin Conley ripped a feed from Brandon Scanlin past goalie Brandon Bussi at 5:58.

But Allison got his second of the night on a power play at 6:38 to make it 4-1.

Sullivan's goal came during a five-minute power play just 59 seconds later.  He tucked home the rebound of a Taylor Ward tip at 7:37 to make it 4-2.

But the Mavericks couldn't net any more goals on the extended man advantage, and Jason Polin iced it with an empty net-goal at 19:24.

Isaiah Saville made 35 saves for the Mavericks while Bussi stopped 23.  Western Michigan held a 40-25 shot advantage.

The two teams finish the four-game season series on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.

GAME NOTES:
  • Conley's goal was his 10th of the season, giving the Mavericks three 10-goal scorers this season.
  • The Mavericks saw their season-high four-game unbeaten streak come to an end.
  • Omaha went 2-for-6 on the power play while the Broncos went 1-for-2.
