Mavericks Come From Behind To Edge Tigers Late, 6-4

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Playing in tight games as become a hallmark for the Omaha hockey team this season.  The Mavericks continue to show they're up to the task.  UNO scored three goals in the third period to pull out a come-from-behind 6-4 win at Colorado College on Friday.

Tyler Weiss scored the game winner off a wraparound shot with 47 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Mavericks their 10th win of the year and leveling their record at 10-10-5 overall.  They also improved to 4-6-3-0/0 in the NCHC, moving them into a tie with St. Cloud State for fifth place.

The Tigers dropped to 8-12-1 overall and 3-9-1-0/0 in the conference, putting them eighth.

The Mavericks entered the third period trailing 4-3 but got a five-minute power play just 56 seconds into the period when Zach Berzolla got an interference major.

Zach Jordan tied the game on the ensuing power play when he snapped home a shot from the right face-off circle at 3:23 for his 11th goal of the season.

Weiss' goal, his fourth of the year, came about from good work along the end boards in the Tigers' zone by Chayse Primeau who freed the puck for Weiss.  Weiss walked out from behind the net and fed the puck through the pads of goalie Matt Vernon for his first career game winner and fourth of the year.

Martin Sundberg added an empty-net goal for the final margin.

The outcome seemed unlikely early in the game.  The Tigers started fast, getting three goals in the first 8:33 of the game and chasing starting goaltender Isaiah Saville who made five saves on eight shots.

The Mavericks countered with some quick strikes of their own.  Just 37 seconds after CC's Jake Gates had scored to make it 3-0, Joey Abate made a steal and fired home a shorthanded goal.  It was his ninth of the year.

Then 1:48 later, Teemu Pulkkinen slipped a shot past Vernon to make it 3-2 after one.

The Mavericks tied the game during a power play at 11:20 of the second period.  Ryan Jones set up Dean Stewart for a slap shot from the blue line that found the top corner for his second of the year.

Stymied for much of the game on the power play, the Tigers finally broke through on their seventh chance to retake the lead.  Grant Cruickshank scored from the left point at 17:12 to make it 4-3 after two.

Austin Roden was sturdy in relief of Saville, making 29 saves on 30 shots and earning his third win of the year.  Vernon stopped 28 for CC.

The two teams finish the series at 5:07 p.m. CT on Saturday from Broadmoor World Arena.
