Mavericks Settle For 2-2 Tie with No. 4 Denver

OMAHA, Neb. – No. 4 Denver scored an extra attacker goal in the final 14 seconds of regulation to forge a 2-2 tie with the Omaha hockey team on Saturday night at Baxter Arena.

Freshman Bobby Brink fired home his ninth of the season with 13.8 seconds remaining to deny the Mavericks their first win over Denver in more than five years.

The Pioneers got a 3-on-3 overtime goal from Michael Davies just 46 seconds in to earn the extra standings point for the second straight night.

In addition to the back-to-back ties for the weekend, it was the third in row dating back to last season.  The Mavericks are now 9-10-5 overall and 3-6-3-0/0 in the NCHC, putting them in a tie with Miami for sixth place.  Denver moved to 15-4-5 overall and 5-3-4-1/2 in the conference, putting it one point out of second.

As with Friday's game, the Mavericks spent the bulk of the first period defending Denver's potent attack.  But a power play late in the period tipped the ice in the Mavericks' favor.  Just four seconds into the man advantage, Taylor Ward collected the rebound of a shot by Zach Jordan and fired a sharp-angle shot past goalie Devin Cooley for his team-leading 13th goal of the year.

Less than a minute later, the Mavericks doubled their lead.  Tristan Keck collected a turnover and zipped a quick shot over Cooley's shoulder at 19:36.

Denver got to within a goal just 1:25 into the second when Cole Guttman scored a power play goal.

Isaiah Saville finished with a career-high 45 saves while Cooley had 11 as the Pioneers outshot the Mavericks, 47-13.

Omaha will face off with the other half of the NCHC's Colorado contingent, traveling to Colorado College on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24-25.
