Omaha Topped In Extra Innings Of Series Finale

OMAHA, Neb. – A 13-inning barn burner fell in favor of the Jackrabbits, as they took the series with a 6-4 win over the Omaha baseball program Sunday afternoon at Seymour Smith Park.
 
Omaha (25-13-1, 17-4) is now just four games ahead in first place over the Jackrabbits (21-17, 13-8), who sit in second with the series win. 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
SDSU's Austin Suhr earned the win (2-0) as he pitched 1.2 innings with a strikeout. His teammate and starter Nic McCay tossed 7.0 shutout innings with just three walks and 11 strikeouts. Cal Hehnke had a career-best nine strikeouts through 5.0 innings in relief, while Richie Holetz fell to 0-1. Starter Spencer Koelewyn had 3.0 innings of work with six strikeouts and five walks with two runs allowed.
 
At the plate, Brett Bonar had two RBI on two hits with a double, while Keil Krumwiede had two doubles on two hits and an RBI. Jack Lombardi registered a pair of hits with an RBI on a double, while Matt Bondarchuk also recorded a multi-hit game with two.
 
INSIDE THE INNINGS
South Dakota State plated its first two runs on back-to-back Omaha wild pitches with two outs in the third. The Mavericks could not get any offense going until later on in the eighth inning during crunch time. Bonar doubled and plated Lombardi and Bondarchuk to even the score.
 
Omaha saw its opportunity in the bottom of the ninth as Braden Rogers singled and Lombardi was hit by a pitch. Another single by Bondarchuk loaded the bases for the Mavericks with two outs. Bonar came up to the plate and rocked a line drive to center, but the SDSU outfielder was able to get under it for the third out.
 
The final runs happened in the 13th inning, as the Jackrabbits were able to plate three. A pop-up bunt resulted in an Omaha error that plated an SDSU runner for the fourth team run. Back-to-back single RBI by the Jackrabbits put them ahead over Omaha, 6-3. A DeBonville double and a Lombardi single for an RBI gave the Mavericks some life, but the gap was too large as SDSU held on for the 6-4 win.
 
UP NEXT
Omaha now sets its sights on the day/night doubleheader against in-town foe Creighton this Tuesday, April 30. The first game is scheduled to take place at Werner Park with a 1 p.m. start time, followed by a 6:30 p.m. game at TD Ameritrade Park later that day.
