Mavericks Slip Against South Dakota State, 3-0

OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha baseball dropped the second game of the series, 3-0, to South Dakota State Saturday afternoon at Seymour Smith Park.

Omaha (25-12-1) saw its chances as the team out-hit the Jackrabbits (20-17, 12-8) 5-4 and put 10 runners on base, but was not able to plate a run through.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Omaha's Payton Kinney fell into the loss column for the first time this season, as he is now 8-1. The senior had four strikeouts through 7.0 innings of work with two runs and four hits allowed. South Dakota State's Ryan Froom improved to 5-3 on the season with five strikeouts and three walks and runs allowed through 5.0 shutout innings. Bret Barnett picked up his fifth save of the season as he closed the final 2.1 innings. Six different players recorded a combined five hits for the Mavericks, while SDSU's Gus Steiger had a game-high two hits.

INSIDE THE INNINGS
The game did not see a run plated until the top of the fourth, when the Jackrabbits had back-to-back singles. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third. The first SDSU run came after the batter reached first on an Omaha error that was able to advance the runner from third to home. The Jackrabbits took a 2-0 lead on a double, followed by a sacrifice fly.

Omaha had its openings, but could not capitalize as the team left the end of the fifth with the bases loaded. Once again in the bottom of the sixth, the Mavericks saw some momentum, but walked out of the frame with another two runners left on. The same followed in the seventh, as Thomas DeBonville was able to get all the way to third, but he was left stranded.

The final SDSU run came in the top of the ninth on another sacrifice fly.
