Saint Louis, Mo. – The Omaha softball team fell to both Northern Colorado and Southeast Missouri State on Saturday at the Billiken Sports Complex. The Mavericks lost 6-3 in eight innings to the Bears, before dropping a 9-1 decision in five innings to the Redhawks.
Northern Colorado 6, Omaha 3 (8 innings)
Omaha fell 6-3 as Northern Colorado pulled away with four runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Mavericks. The Bears were first on the scoreboard with single runs in the top of the second and third.
Lexi Burkhardt cut the deficit to 2-1 with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Omaha tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh. Burkhardt reached on an infield single and moved to second on
Janae Cameron's sacrifice bunt. After a strikeout,
Emma Dargy lined a single up the middle to score Burkhardt.
Emily Klosterman was then hit by a pitch to give the Mavericks runners on first and second with two outs.
Alexa Sedlak singled through the left side but pinch runner
Sydney Schelkopf was thrown out at home forcing extra innings.
Northern Colorado responded with four runs on two hits, two errors, a walk and a hit batsman in the top of the eighth. Omaha tried to mount another comeback in the bottom half of the frame. Sedlak was placed on second per tournament rules to start the inning.
Jamie White singled to right to bring Sedlak home but was thrown out trying to advance to second. Northern Colorado then retired the next two batters to take the 6-3 victory.
Burkhardt went 2-for-3 with a home run, an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Mavericks at the plate. Dargy added a 1-for-4 performance with an RBI. Both Sedlak and White went 1-for-3 at the plate.
Sydney Hampton pitched 4.0 innings allowing two runs on five hits and a walk. Reliever
Halley Jones (0-5) allowed four runs (three earned) on a hit and two walks and was credited with the loss.
Southeast Missouri State 9, Omaha 4
Omaha fell behind early and battled their way back in the second game of the day against Southeast Missouri State, but eventually, the Redhawks defeated the Mavericks 9-4.
Southeast Missouri State struck in the top of the second to take the early lead. Omaha retired the first two batters of the inning before SEMO strung together three straight singles to score its first run of the game. The Redhawks second run of the inning came when Kaylee Anderson stole home for a 2-0 advantage.
The Mavericks put runners on first in second in the bottom half of the frame. White singled to open the inning and went to second when
Hailey Bartz walked, but a fielder's choice ended the scoring opportunity.
The Redhawks added two more runs in the top of the third on two hits and a stolen base. The Mavericks got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame.
Lexi Burchfield reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a wild pitch. Sedlak hit a double to center that allowed Burchfield to cross the plate to cut the lead to 4-1.
SEMO used a five-run fourth inning to take control of the game.
Omaha answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Natalie Mostek led off with her first home run of the season. Sedlak hit a two-out double to center and then scored on White's third homer of the season to make it a 9-4 game.
Both teams went scoreless the final two innings as Southeast Missouri claimed the victory.
White went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI to lead Omaha at the plate. Sedlak added a 2-for-4 effort with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Mostek went 1-for-3 with a homer.
Ryanne Millington (1-8) started and took the loss for the Mavericks. Millington allowed eight runs on 11 hits in 3.2 innings. Jones pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks.
The Mavericks are now 2-22 on the season.
