OXFORD, Ohio – Senior
Evan Weninger became the Omaha hockey team's career shutout leader, leading the Mavericks to a 3-0 win over Miami on Friday night at Steve Cady Arena.
Weninger made 38 saves to earn his eighth career shutout, passing Dan Ellis for first all-time at UNO. It was his fourth shutout of the season, putting him second in the NCHC.
Senior
Ryan Galt had a goal and an assist to lead the Mavericks to their second road win of the season.
The Mavericks got the game-winning goal at 6:10 into the second period. Galt found
Teemu Pulkkinen for a backdoor goal, his third of the year, during Omaha's third power play of the game.
Galt gave the Mavericks some breathing room in the third when he whipped home the rebound of a shot by
John Schuldt at 4:21.
Mason Morelli added an empty-net goal with 27 seconds remaining to seal the win.
The Mavericks improve to 9-16-2 overall and 5-11-1-0/1 in the NCHC, putting them five points ahead of the last-place RedHawks. Miami suffered its ninth straight loss, dipping to 9-16-4 overall and 3-12-2-1/0 in the conference.
The two teams finish the season series on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. CT.
GAME NOTES:
- Weninger reached another milestone in the game, making his 3,000th career save. He now has 3,004, 121 behind Ellis for the UNO career lead.
- Morelli's goal was his NCHC-leading 18th goal of the season. He moved into a tie with teammate Fredrik Olofsson for the team scoring lead with 30 points.
- Galt's goal was his fourth of the season, a career best.
- The Mavericks went 1-for-3 on the power play while holding the RedHawks without a goal on three power play chances. UNO has scored at least one power play goal in 21 of 27 games this season.
- Omaha improved to 6-1-2 at Miami since the two teams joined the NCHC. Overall, the Mavericks are 19-21-6 all-time against the RedHawks including a mark of 7-11-5 in Oxford.
