ATHENS, Ga. – The Omaha softball team dropped its first two games at the Red & Black Showcase today at Turner Stadium. The Mavericks lost a 4-1 decision to Buffalo in the first game of the day and then fell 8-3 to nationally rated Georgia 8-3.
Leaders for Omaha
Sophomore
Alexa Sedlak led the Mavericks with a .667 average (2-for-3) with a double on the day. Junior
Hailey Bartz hit .500 (3-for-6) with a pair of doubles. Freshman
Alyssa DiFiore added a 1-for-2 day.
Buffalo 4, Omaha 1
Buffalo struck for three runs in the bottom of the first. Alexis Matheney led off the inning with a solo home run. After a pair of walks and a sac bunt, Catrell Robertson drove in the Bulls second run of the inning. Buffalo's third run of the inning came as Jenelle Martinez raced home while Robertson was thrown out at second.
Omaha had its first scoring chance in the top of the fourth as senior
Savannah Fisher and freshman
Jamie White each singled with one out. Buffalo's starter was able to get the next two outs to prevent any damage.
The Mavericks finally got on the board in the fifth. Bartz reached on a one-out single and moved to third on freshman
Sydney Schelkopf's single through the right side. Bartz scampered home on junior
Emma Dargy's ground out.
Ufuoma Ogagan added an insurance run for Buffalo in the sixth with a solo homer.
Sophomore
Sydney Hampton (0-3) started and pitched 3.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Freshman
Ryanne Millington pitched the final 3.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts.
Buffalo's Ally Power (1-3) pitched a complete game in the win, allowing one run on six hits with two strikeouts.
No. 9 Georgia 8, Omaha 3
Omaha came out swinging to start game two. Bartz doubled down the left field line and Fisher was hit by a pitch. White drove in the game's first run with an RBI double to left center, before freshman

The host Bulldogs tied things at 2-2 on a walk and a homer. Georgia added four runs on a hit and five walks in the bottom of the second.
The Mavericks cut into the lead in the sixth inning. Freshman
Sierra Leonetti reached on an error and moved to third on singles by senior
Natalie Mostek and freshman
Alyssa DiFiore. Leonetti scampered home on senior
Faith Romero's infield hit to make the score 6-3.
Georgia added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half of the infield to make the final 8-3.
Sedlak led the Mavericks at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort, including a double and a run scored. Cameron, Mostek and White each drove in a run.
Millington (0-3) pitched 1.2 innings allowing six runs on two hits and five walks in the loss. Hampton allowed two runs on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts while pitching the final 4.1 innings.
Omaha is now 0-7 on the season.
