Pioneers Hold Off Mavericks, 1-0

DENVER, Colo. – The Omaha hockey team lost to No. 3/4 Denver, 1-0, on Friday night to open its two-game NCHC series at Magness Arena.

The Mavericks put forth a determined effort but could not prevent the Pioneers from extending their winning streak over UNO to 13 games.  Omaha is now 6-11-2 overall and 2-6-1-0-/1 in the NCHC, good for seventh place.  DU improved to 13-4-2 overall and 5-4-0-0/0 in the conference, putting it fourth.

Denver got the game's only goal at 18:48 of the second period.  Emilio Pettersen broke down the left wing and dropped a pass to Jarid Lukosevicius who whipped a shot past Evan Weninger for his 12th goal of the season.

The Mavericks had three power plays in the third period and pulled Weninger during one late with a chance to tie it.  DU freshman goalie Filip Larsson made several tough saves to preserve the win.

Weninger led both goaltenders with 33 saves while Larsson earned his first career shutout with 21.

The two teams finish the series on Saturday at 8:07 p.m. CT

GAME NOTES:
  • The Mavericks finished 0-for-4 on the power play while holding Denver 0-for-3.
  • Denver has shutout the Mavericks in each of the last four meetings.
