Pioneers Get By Mavericks In OT, 3-2

DENVER, Colo. – No. 3 Denver scored a late game-tying goal and then tallied again 55 seconds into overtime to beat the Omaha hockey team, 3-2, on Saturday at Magness Arena.

The stunning win gave the Pioneers a sweep of the Mavericks after a similarly narrow 1-0 win in Friday's series opener.  The Mavericks fell to 6-12-2 overall and 2-7-1-0/1 in the NCHC good for seventh place.  Denver won its seventh straight to improve to 14-4-2 overall and 6-4-0-0/0 in the conference, moving it into third.

Omaha led 2-1 after two and fought through two penalty kills to stay in front late into third.  But with their goaltender pulled, the Pioneers tied the game with 1:21 left when Ian Mitchell's shot from the point deflected past Evan Weninger.

DU got the winner when Cole Guttman tapped home a feed from Jarid Lukosevicius for his 10th goal of the season.

The Pioneers have now won 14th straight over the Mavericks dating back to the 2014-15 season.

The Mavericks opened the scoring at 9:58 of the second period.  Fredrik Olofsson forced a turnover at the UNO blue line, allowing Mason Morelli to break free up the right win.  Morelli wired a wrist shot over the glove hand of goalie Filip Larsson for his team-leading and career-best 13th goal of the season.

Denver countered less than three minutes later on a power play.  Liam Finlay backhanded home a feed from Colin Staub at 12:55 to tie it.

The Mavericks retook the lead on their own power play.  Dean Stewart set up Zach Jordan at the right face-off circle.  He zipped a wrist shot to the far corner at 17:05 to put UNO up 2-1.

Weninger again was superb in goal for Omaha.  He made 39 saves one night after making 33 saves.  Larsson finished with 29 saves for DU.

The Mavericks return home to host North Dakota on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 18-19.
