MACOMB, Ill. – Freshman
Aubrey Hacke fired a four-hit, complete-game shutout to lead the Omaha softball team to a 1-0 win in game two of a doubleheader against Western Illinois on Saturday at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium. The Mavericks dropped the first game, 5-1.
With the split, UNO is now 15-27 overall (3-7 Summit League) while WIU moves to 15-23 (7-1).
Western Illinois 5, Omaha 1
Jessica Nelson led the Mavericks at the plate going 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Emma Dargy added a 1-for-3 effort with a double and a run scored.
Savannah Fisher and
Natalie Mostek each had a hit.
Western Illinois' Emily Ira (8-7) tossed a complete game for the win in the opener. She allowed four hits on the day and held Omaha to one run with one walk and 10 strikeouts.
Laura Roecker (1-7) took the loss, surrendering three runs on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Hacke faced two batters allowing two runs on two hits.
Omaha struck first in the top of the second inning. Dargy led off with a double to center before stealing second. Nelson then reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Dargy to score and put the Mavericks in front 1-0.
Hailey Duwa led off the bottom of the second with a solo homer to even the score, 1-1.
Western Illinois pushed four runs across the plate in the bottom of the fourth. WIU's first six batters reached safely as the Fighting Leathernecks took a 4-1 lead. After a strikeout, Rachel Beatty hit an RBI single for a 5-1 lead. Roecker struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
Ira retired nine of the final 10 batters she faced to earn the win.
Omaha 1, Western Illinois 0
In the nightcap,
Demi Dobbs went 2-for-3 while
Savannah Fisher went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Dargy, Mostek, Nelson and
Faith Romero each had one hit.
Mostek opened the game with a single to right center and moved to second on Hacke's sacrifice bunt. Fisher then singled to center to bring home Mostek and give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.
Western Illinois put runners on first and third with two outs in the bottom of the second, but Hacke got a groundout to end the inning. WIU put runners on first and second with no outs in the third, but Hacke again pitched out of trouble.
The Mavericks threatened in the fourth, but Carlin was able to get a double play to keep the game close at 1-0.
The Fighting Leathernecks again put two runners on base in the sixth but were unable to capitalize.
Omaha put two runners on in the top of the seventh. Dobbs started things off with a two-out double. Klosterman then walked, but Carlin again worked out of trouble.
Western Illinois put runners on base in the seventh, but Hacke got a pop fly to end the game.
