Omaha Tops South Dakota State on Senior Day, 8-6

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha softball team snapped an 11-game losing streak Saturday afternoon, defeating South Dakota State 8-6 on Senior Day at Westside Field at Westbrook.

With the win, the Mavericks are now 13-24 on the season (1-5 Summit League), while the Jackrabbits dropped to 21-10 (2-1).

Demi Dobbs led UNO at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI.  Kelly Pattison finished 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored.  Savannah Fisher went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and an RBI.  Emma Dargy and Jessica Nelson each went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Brittney Morse went 2-for-4 with a double, homer and four RBI to lead the Jackrabbits.  Ali Herdliska added a 2-for-2 day at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.

Halley Jones (1-1) picked up the win, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and five walks in 5.1 innings.  Laura Roecker picked up her first save of the season, pitching 1.2 innings allowing one walk and striking out one.  South Dakota State's Madison Hope (12-4) took the loss, throwing 4.0 innings allowing eight runs (four earned) on 10 hits with a walk and three strikeouts.  Kendra Conard pitched the final 2.0 innings allowing a walk with a strikeout.

Omaha took the lead in the bottom of the first.  Aubrey Hacke reached on a fielder's choice and came in to score on Fisher's RBI single through the right side that put the Mavericks ahead 1-0.

South Dakota State took the lead in the top of the third inning.  Abby Murphy singled to open the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Following a Herdliska single, Morse homered to left field to put the Jackrabbits in front, 3-1.

After the Mavericks put runners on first and second with one out to start the third, Nelson hit an RBI double to left field.  Omaha tied the game when Dargy scored on a throwing error by the SDSU third baseman.  Sarrah Mains gave UNO the lead with a sacrifice fly to center field.  Dobbs then blasted a two-run homer to center field for a 6-3 lead.

The Omaha offense added a pair of runs in the fourth inning.  Pattison hit a one-out double and moved to third on Fisher's single through the right side.  Dargy's sac fly to center scored Pattison, and Fisher scored on a fielding error to make the score 8-3.

SDSU threatened in the seventh, putting runners on first and second with two out.  Roecker then settled down and got a lineup to end the game.

The Mavericks return to action on Tuesday, April 3 against Nebraska.  First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Westside Field at Westbrook.
