Huskies Finish Sweep of Mavericks, 6-2

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 6/4 St. Cloud State scored three unanswered goals to pull away for a 6-2 win over the No. 13 Omaha hockey team on Saturday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

The Mavericks dropped to 14-13-1 overall and 7-11-0-0/0 in the NCHC, keeping them in sixth place.  St. Cloud State improved to 17-6-3 overall and 11-4-1-0/0 in the conference.  It was Omaha's fifth straight loss to the Huskies dating back to last season.

The Mavericks trailed 3-0 early in the second after SCSU put up a pair of goals in the first and another early in the second.  But UNO mounted a comeback starting just 26 seconds after the Huskies had gotten up by three.  Riley Alferd fired shot that slipped through goalie Jeff Smith at 2:10 for his second of the season.

The Mavericks narrowed the gap to a goal when Fredrik Olofsson tracked down a loose puck and threw it to the net.  Zach Jordan was crashing the crease, and the puck ricocheted in off his skate.  The play was upheld by video review, giving Jordan his 13th goal of the season.

But St. Cloud State answered back with an even-strength goal from Jake Wahlin and a power play marker by Will Borgen to lead 5-2 after two.

Easton Brodzinski scored in the third to complete the scoring.

Evan Weninger made 35 saves while Smith stopped 24 shots.  The Huskies outshot the Mavericks, 41-26.

Omaha is off next week before hosting North Dakota on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16-17.
