OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 13 Omaha hockey team scored five unanswered goals to pull away for a 6-3 win over No. 9/10 North Dakota on Friday at Baxter Arena.
Ryan Galt,
Zach Jordan and
Tyler Vesel each had a goal and an assist to help the Mavericks earn their first win over UND at Baxter Arena. The Mavericks improved to 15-13-1 overall and 8-11-0-0/0 in the NCHC. North Dakota dipped to 13-10-8 overall and 7-8-4-0/2 in the conference.
North Dakota led 2-0 after the first period on goals by Jordan Kawaguchi and Matt Kiersted, but Vesel got the Mavericks on the board when he beat goalie Peter Thome with a wrist shot at 2:27 for his 11th goal of the year.
UND's Shane Gersich restored the two-goal lead when he tipped in a shot by Colton Poolman during a power play at 5:58.
The Mavericks got their second power play goal of the night just 2:34 later to narrow the UND lead.
Teemu Pulkkinen redirected a shot by
Zach Jordan for his fifth goal of the year, a career best.
Omaha then tied the game on its third power play goal in as many tries when Jordan scored his 14th of the year at 15:08.
Just 1:43, the Mavericks got the lead when Galt banged in the rebound of a shot by
Martin Sundberg for his career-best third goal of the year.
The Mavericks got several strong saves from
Evan Weninger in the third as UND held a 15-9 shot advantage. UNO got empty net goals from
Luke Nogard and
David Pope in a span of 21 seconds late in the period to ice the win.
Weninger finished with 38 saves while Thome stopped 20. The Fighting Hawks outshot the Mavericks 41-28.
The series concludes on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
GAME NOTES:
- The Mavericks snapped a five-game home losing streak to North Dakota and improved to 1-4-0 against the Fighting Hawks at Baxter Arena.
- The win was the 11th of the season for the Mavericks at Baxter, besting the previous mark of 10 wins during the arena's inaugural season.
- The Mavericks improved to 7-0-0 at home since the Christmas break and have outscored opponents, 44-22.
- With four goals in the second period, the Mavericks have now scored 52 goals in the middle frame, one behind Minnesota State which remarkably scored five in its game with Ferris State on the same night.
- Pope's goal was his 20th of the season, giving the Mavericks a 20-goal scorer in five consecutive seasons.
- Galt's goal was his first career game winner.
- Joel Messner finished the night with two assists.
- Weninger tied his career high for wins in a season with his 13th of the year.
