Sophomores Shine in 4-2 Win over Tigers

OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 14 Omaha hockey team got three points each from sophomores Tristan Keck, Zach Jordan and Teemu Pulkkinen in a 4-2 win over Colorado College on Friday night at Baxter Arena.

The win helped the Mavericks move ahead of the Tigers into sixth place in the NCHC with a record of 9-12-0-0/0.  They are now 16-14-1 overall.  The Tigers fell to 13-14-4 overall and 7-11-3-2/0 in the conference.

Keck opened the scoring for UNO 3:58 into the game.  He took a pass from Pulkkinen, raced down the right wing and beat goalie Alex Leclerc with a hard wrist shot just inside the far post.  It was his career-best eighth goal of the season and first in 10 games.

Only 2:28 later, Keck was at it again.  He tracked down a loose puck on the left wing and sent it across to Jordan who fired home a quick shot for his career-best 15th goal of the year.

The Mavericks stretched their lead with a power play early in the second period.  Pulkkinen jammed home the rebound of a shot by Jordan at 4:31.

Then with the teams skating 4-on-4, Lukas Buchta got credit for his first career goal.  He got to a loose puck in the slot, swatting it on goal.  Goaltender Alec Calvaruso, who came in for Leclerc after the third goal, inadvertently knocked it into his own net.

The Tigers got goals from Trevor Gooch and Christiano Versich in the first 10:55 of the third but could not dent Evan Weninger again.  Weninger finished with 30 saves and earned his career-best 14th win of the year.

Leclerc, who made 14 saves and allowed three goals, took the loss, falling to 13-12-4.  Calvaruso made 25 saves.

The two teams wrap up the series on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.  The game will be preceded by a recognition of UNO's six seniors.
