Mavericks Tied Up with Tigers, 2-2

OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 14 Omaha hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with visiting Colorado College on Saturday at Baxter Arena.

The teams skated into a 3-on-3 overtime mandated by the NCHC after they played scoreless through the standard five-minute overtime.  The Tigers earned two standings points with a goal in the second extra period while the Mavericks earned one.

UNO is now 16-14-2 overall and 9-12-1-0/0 in the NCHC, putting it in a three-way tie with CC and Western Michigan for fifth place.  The Tigers are 13-14-5 overall and 7-11-3-3/0 in the conference.

The Mavericks led 2-1 in the third, but the Tigers tied the game on a fortunate bounce when the puck ricocheted into the net past Evan Weninger after hitting one of the Mavericks.  The goal was credited to Nick Halloran at 13:47.

The Mavericks had a golden opportunity to retake the lead on a late power play.  But the referee lost sight of the puck as Jake Randolph was about to take a shot at a gaping net, blowing play dead.

As expected, the second game of the weekend series was tight from start to finish.  The Mavericks earned a 4-2 win in the series opener on Friday.

The Tigers got their first lead of the weekend late in the first period.  Just as their power play expired, Tanner Ockey tipped in a shot by Christiano Versich at 18:14.

The Mavericks tied the game midway through the second.  Tyler Vesel was stopped on a shot in tight, but Steven Spinner curled the net with the rebound.  His first shot was stopped by goalie Alec Calvaruso, but Spinner snapped in the rebound at 11:44.

UNO got its first lead of the night later in the period.  Tristan Keck forced the puck free from a CC defenseman at the UNO blue line and took off on a breakaway.  He threaded the puck through Calvaruso's pads for a shorthanded goal at 18:53.

Weninger made 23 saves in the game while Calvaruso turned aside 34 shots as the Mavericks outshot CC, 36-25.

The Mavericks finish the regular season at Minnesota Duluth on Friday and Saturday, March 2-3.

  • Keck's goal was UNO's second shorthanded goal of the season.
