Mavericks Fall to Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on Sunday

HAMMOND, La. – The Omaha softball team dropped a 2-1 decision to Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on the final day of the Lion Classic II.

With the loss, the Mavericks are now 5-5 on the season, while the Islanders improved to 3-4.

Texas A&M – Corpus Christi struck first against starter Laura Roecker in the top of the first inning.  The first two Islanders reached base before the Mavericks recorded an out on a fielder's choice.  Keagan Helson stole second, and Whitney Wendel scored from third on an error by the catcher to put the Islanders up, 1-0.

Omaha came back to tie the score in the bottom of the second inning.  Crystal Pablo led off with a single and eventually came in to score on Demi Dobb's double to right field.

Texas A&M – Corpus Christi took the lead for good in the top of the fourth inning.  Kaylon Dunn hit a one-out double and moved to third on a balk.  Dunn came in to score on a fielder's choice to give the Islanders the lead, 2-1.

Omaha was able to put runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings but was unable to score the tying run.

-    Laura Roecker (0-2) pitched her first complete game of the season, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
-    Dobbs and Faith Romero each had doubles for the Mavericks.
-    Pablo went 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.

Up Next
Omaha continues play next weekend at the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Tournament in Corpus Christi, Texas.  The Mavericks will play five games starting Friday, Feb. 23.  First up Friday is a game against Utah State at 12:30 p.m. before playing Texas Southern at 3 p.m.
