ZACHARY, La. – The Omaha softball team overcame an early deficit to topple Southern 4-2 on Wednesday evening at the Zachary Youth Park.
With the win, the Mavericks are now 3-2 on the season, while the Wildcats dropped to 2-2.
Omaha scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to break open a 1-1 game.
Emma Dargy walked to open the inning and moved to second on
Sarrah Mains groundout.
Taylor Conkling reached on an infield single to put two runners on base.
Jessica Nelson followed with a walk to load the bases.
Emily Klosterman walked to drive in a run and give UNO a 2-1 lead. Following a pitching change,
Crystal Pablo picked up an RBI with another walk.
Demi Dobbs' groundout drove in Omaha's third of the inning.
Southern opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Sydney Andrews drew a leadoff walk and stole second. She then moved to third on a passed ball before coming home on a sacrifice bunt.
Omaha answered in the top of the second.
Natalie Mostek led off with a double down the leftfield line. Dargy then hit an RBI single to even the game at 1-1.
Dargy, Klosterman and Mostek each had two hits to lead UNO at the plate. Dargy finished 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Klosterman went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and two RBI. Mostek ended the day 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Aubrey Hacke (1-1) picked up the victory in relief, allowing one run on three hits and three walks over 4.2 innings with three strikeouts. Elizabeth Donaldson (1-1) took the loss for Southern, giving up the Mavericks' go-ahead run in the fifth inning on two hits and two walks.
Halley Jones started and threw 2.1 innings for Omaha, allowing one run on two hits and four walks.

- Mostek provided more offense in her second start of the year posting a 2-for-3 effort. She scored her third run of the season and pushed her batting average to .571.
- Dargy posted her first multi-hit game of the season and moved her average to .429.
- Omaha went 2-for-5 in stolen base attempts on Wednesday.
