Mavericks Top RedHawks 6-3 For First Win

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha hockey team got goals from six different players to earn a 6-3 win over No. 20 Miami on Saturday night at Baxter Arena.

It was the Mavericks' first win of the season after going winless in their first seven games.  It also helped them get a split of their two-game NCHC series with the RedHawks who saw their four-game winning streak broken.

Omaha is now 1-6-1 overall and 1-1-0-0/0 in the NCHC while Miami is 7-3-0 overall with a similar conference record.

The game turned in the second period with the Mavericks trailing 2-1.  Miami lost its captain Josh Melnick to a spearing major at 6:50.  With MU's Bray Crowder already in the penalty box, the Mavericks tied the game on the 5-on-3 power play when Fredrik Olofsson roofed a pass from Dean Stewart at 7:35.

On the ensuing 5-on-4 power play, the Mavericks scored twice more.  Kevin Conley zipped one past the glove hand of goalie Ryan Larkin, giving Omaha its first lead of the weekend, at 9:01.

Almost two minutes later, Chayse Primeau made a nice move in traffic before slipping the puck underneath Larkin for his second goal of the season.

In the third, Miami's Gordie Green drew his team to within one with his team-leading sixth goal of the year at 1:45.

The Mavericks answered during a 53-second stretch late in the period.  Zach Jordan hunted down and loose puck and fed it to Tristan Keck who was uncovered at the far post for the goal that made it 5-3.

Mason Morelli added the sixth when he converted the rebound of a shot by Taylor Ward at 14:22.

The win was Omaha's first when surrendering the first goal of the game.  In fact, the Mavericks trailed 2-0 late in the first period.

Miami's Grant Hutton wired home a shot from the point during a 5-on-3 power play at 12:59 of the first period.

On the ensuing 5-on-4, a blocked shot ricocheted to Phil Knies who roofed the puck over Evan Weninger at 14:10.

The Mavericks started their stretch of four straight goals late in the period.  Olofsson set up Morelli in the slot.  Morelli's shot missed wide, but Ward converted almost from the goal line for his third goal in as many games.

Weninger made 20 saves for his 40th career win while Larkin stopped 31 as the Mavericks outshot the RedHawks, 37-23.

The Mavericks return to the road to visit Western Michigan on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9-10.
