KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan used a three-goal first period to pull away for a 7-2 win over the Omaha hockey team in the series opener on Friday night at Lawson Arena.
The Mavericks, who got goals from
Fredrik Olofsson and
Kevin Conley in the third period, trailed by as much as 6-0 and fell to 1-7-1 overall and 1-2-0-0/0 in NCHC play. The Broncos improved to 4-5-0 overall and 1-2-0-0/0 in the conference.
Western Michigan weathered an early 5-on-3 penalty kill and took control of the game during a span of less than two minutes of the first period. Colt Conrad zipped a shot under the crossbar for his third goal of the season at 11:27.
Fifty-five seconds later, Dawson DiPietro set up Austin Ruschhoff for a back-door goal, his fourth of the season.
Cole Gallant made it 3-0 at 13:21, slipping in a sharp-angle shot past
Evan Weninger.
Weninger was pulled in the second after Lawton Courtnall scored shorthanded at 5:09.
Wade Allison added another goal, beating backup
Matej Tomek with a backhander at 15:13 to make it 5-0 after two.
Gallant earned his second of the game at 3:38 of the third period before the Mavericks got on the board. Olofsson grabbed the rebound of a shot by
Taylor Ward and threw home his third of the season on a power play at 8:48.
Conley made it 6-2 with an unassisted goal. He broke in down the left wing, held off a Western Michigan defender, and roofed a shot past goalie Trevor Gorsuch at 10:42.
Western Michigan's Drew Worrad finished the scoring with a goal at 17:59.
Weninger took the loss with four goals against on 13 shots. Tomek made 14 saves and allowed three goals. Gorsuch stopped 16 shots for Western Michigan which outshot Omaha, 30-18.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 6:05 p.m. CT.
GAME NOTES:
- With an assist, Ward tied a team season high by earning a point in his fourth straight game.
- All three of Olofsson's goals this season have come on the power play.
- The 18 shots on goal were a season low for the Mavericks.
- The Mavericks have scored a power play goal in all but one game this season.
- Omaha was a perfect 6-for-6 on the penalty kill, including killing a five-minute major to Cole Pickup in the second period.
