Mavericks Blanked By Denver in Opener, 5-0

DENVER, Colo. – No. 5 Denver shut out the No. 15 Omaha hockey team, 5-0, on Friday night at Magness Arena.

The Pioneers' win extended their winning streak against the Mavericks to 11 games. They are now 13-6-4 overall and 7-4-2-1/0, moving into a second-place tie with Western Michigan in the NCHC.  The Mavericks fell to 12-10-1 overall and 5-8-0-0/0 in the conference, putting them in sixth.

The Pioneers scored first on a power play late in the first period.  Ian Mitchell's shot from the left point was tipped in by Jarid Lukosevicius at 18:45.

Denver added to its lead early in the second period when Dylan Gambrell set up Mitchell who slipped a shot under Evan Weninger at 2:42.

The Pioneers poured it on in the third.  They got a power play goal from Troy Terry less than a minute after they had an apparent goal waved off because of an offside.  The tally just 4:52 into the period was Terry's ninth of the season.

Lukosevicius added his second of the night on a power play at 6:35, and defenseman Erich Fear scored at 12:37 to finish the scoring.

Weninger made a season-high 43 saves as the Mavericks were outshot, 48-34.  Denver's Tanner Jaillet earned his third shutout of the season with 34 saves.

The two teams conclude the series on Saturday at 8:05 p.m. CT.

GAME NOTES:
  • The Mavericks were shutout for the fourth time this season, the third time in NCHC play.
  • The 48 shots allowed by the Mavericks were a season high.
  • Weninger had a personal four-game winning streak snapped in the loss.
  • UNO fell to 2-15-2 all-time in Denver.
