Denver Closes Out Sweep with 4-0 Win

DENVER, Colo. – No. 5 Denver shutout the No. 15 Omaha hockey team for the second straight night, winning 4-0 on Saturday at Magness Arena.

The Mavericks fell to 12-11-1 overall and 5-9-0-0/0 in the NCHC, putting them in a tie with Colorado College for sixth place.  The Pioneers improved to 14-6-4 overall and 8-4-2-1/0 in the conference, moving them into first place ahead of St. Cloud State.

As they did in the first game, the Pioneers struck first late in the first period.  Jaakko Heikkinen fired home as pass from Jake Durflinger at 18:15.

Denver doubled its lead late in the second period.  Henrik Borgstrom separated Lukas Buchta from the puck with a thundering check against the end boards.  Borgstrom then finished off the ensuing net-mouth scramble, knocking in his team-leading 16th goal at 17:32.

In the third, Troy Terry scored on a 5-on-3 power play at 2:01, and Colin Staub added an empty-net goal at 17:55

Evan Weninger made 25 saves in the loss while Tanner Jaillet made 30 saves for his second straight shutout win.

The Mavericks are back home to host Western Michigan on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26-27.

GAME NOTES:
  • With the Denver leading 1-0 in the second, Dean Stewart hit the crossbar with a shot from the blue line.  In the third, the Mavericks trailed 2-0 when Tyler Vesel hit the right post with consecutive shots during a power play.
  • The Mavericks lost their 12th straight to the Pioneers and have been held without a goal in the last three meetings.
