Western Illinois Drops Omaha, 3-1

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha volleyball team completed its three-match homestand Tuesday night, dropping a 3-1 (22-25, 22-25, 25-19, 17-25) decision to Western Illinois at Baxter Arena. The Mavericks are now 3-14 (0-3 Summit League) on the year, while the Leathernecks improve to 4-14 (1-2 Summit League).

Three Mavericks had double-double efforts for the night: junior Sydney O'Shaughnessy (48 assists/12 digs), freshman Hannah Angeli (12 kills/14 digs) and sophomore Kayla Torson (10 kills/16 digs). O'Shaughnessy's was her team-leading eighth such effort of the season.

Freshman Chloe Dousette also had a season-high 11 kills, and junior Amanda Conlin had 10 more. Defensively, freshman Ashley Smith and redshirt freshman Meagen Roth both had double-figure dig performances with 21 and 10, respectively. Freshman Ellie Brown led the way on the block, totaling three stops in addition to six kills.

Western Illinois was led by 12 kills from Claire Grove and another 11 from Lexi Kolschefski. Abby Skyrd had a double-double with 38 assists and 12 digs with three blocks.

Omaha found itself in a two-game hole to start, as Western Illinois won the first and second sets by identical scores of 25-22 to go ahead 2-0.

The Mavericks gutted out a win in game three, breaking past a late 17-17 tie with a 5-0 run courtesy of three Leatherneck errors and back-to-back kills by Torson and O'Shaughnessy. After two straight WIU scores, a Leatherneck setting error and a Torson kill brought it to set point at 24-18. Western responded with a Shalyn Greenhaw kill, but Torson hammered another to put it away, 25-19.

In the fourth set, however, WIU worked past an early 2-2 lock and never looked back, holding off UNO for a 25-17 set decision and a 3-1 match final.

Omaha returns to the court on Friday, Sept. 30, kicking off its first league roadtrip with a visit to South Dakota State. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start in Brookings, S.D., and links to live stats and video will be available on OMavs.com.
