North Dakota State Rallies Past Mavericks, 4-3

Box Score FARGO, N.D. -- The Omaha baseball team concluded its weekend series at North Dakota State Sunday afternoon, falling 4-3 at Newman Outdoor Field. The Mavericks are now 24-22 (14-10 Summit League), while the Bison improve to 26-21 (10-14 Summit League).

Brian VanderWoude (7-2) earned the win in relief, limiting Omaha to two hits and a walk over 2.1 shutout innings with two strikeouts. Sophomore left-hander Brad Olsen (0-1) took the loss for the Mavericks, surrendering the go-ahead run in the seventh on two hits. Sean Terres got his sixth save of the year for the Bison, striking out one over the final two-thirds of the ninth inning.

Sophomore Adam Caniglia led the Mavericks with two hits for a 2-for-4 day at the plate.

Senior Cole Gruber also 1-for-2 with a double, two walks, two runs scored and two stolen bases. The pair of swiped bags brings Gruber to 100 stolen bases in his career, which makes him the first player in school history and the second in Summit League history to reach the century mark in that category.

Senior Clayton Taylor also went 1-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI, and sophomore Ryan Cate was 1-for-4 with two runs driven in.

The Maverick offense wasted no time getting on the board early, as UNO took a two-run lead in the top of the first inning. Gruber led off the game with a walk and stole second, then scored on Taylor's RBI double to left center. After a flyout by senior Alex Schultz advanced Taylor to third, Cate's RBI groundout drove in Taylor for a 2-0 tally.

Omaha plated another run in the third, which again started with a Gruber walk, followed by his second stolen base of the day. After Schultz flew out to move Gruber to third, Cate came through with an RBI single to left to score him for a 3-0 lead.

North Dakota State cut into Omaha's lead with a run on three hits in the fourth. Ben Petersen, Brayden Resch and Taylor Sanders started off with consecutive singles to load the bases, and Jayse McLean followed with a sacrifice fly to left center that scored Petersen for a 3-1 score.

NDSU rallied to take its first lead of the weekend in the seventh, putting up three runs with another three-hit inning. Juan Gamez led off with a walk and Drew Fearing singled to center to put runners on the corners for Paul Funk, who drove in Gamez with an RBI groundout. Following a Maverick pitching change, Petersen put an RBI single through the left side to score Fearing. Petersen then stole second to move into scoring position for Resch, who delivered an RBI single to short that plated Petersen and put the Bison ahead 4-3.

NDSU's lead held behind the relief of VanderWoude and Terres, who allowed leadoff hits in the eighth and ninth but ultimately kept Omaha scoreless over the final two innings.

Omaha returns to action on Wednesday, May 11, visiting in-state foe Nebraska. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. at Haymarket Park in Lincoln, Neb., and the game will be televised live on NET and BTN Plus. Links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.
