SDSU Blanks Omaha to End League Tournament Run

Box Score TULSA, Okla. -- The Omaha baseball team's 2016 season came to an end Thursday afternoon, as the Mavericks were shut out 8-0 by South Dakota State in an elimination game at the Summit League Tournament at J.L. Johnson Stadium. No. 2-seeded UNO finishes its first year with full Division I eligibility with a record of 28-28 (18-12 Summit League), while No. 4-seeded SDSU continues play with a season mark of 22-34.

The win went to SDSU reliever Will McAffer (2-0), who threw six innings of one-hit shutout ball with no walks and three strikeouts. Junior left-hander Sam Murphy (4-6) took the loss, surrendering five runs -- four earned -- on six hits with two walks and a strikeout over four innings.

Omaha was limited to four hits on the day but was paced by a 2-for-4 showing at the plate by senior Cole Gruber. Senior Clayton Taylor and sophomore Adam Caniglia each added a hit of their own.

South Dakota State was led by a 3-for-3 day by Phil Velez, who scored twice and drove in a pair of runs. Luke Ringhofer was 2-for-4 and added three RBI.

The Jackrabbits wasted no time offensively, taking a 1-0 lead over Omaha in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Tony Kjolsing reached and went to second on a fielding error, advanced to third on a Paul Jacobson single to center and scored on an RBI single to left by Ringhofer.

SDSU extended its lead in the second with three runs on three hits. Velez led off with a single to center and Skyler Wenninger put another in right center to put runners on the corners, and Velez scored when Kjolsing reached on a fielder's choice. After a Jacobson walk, Ringhofer doubled down the left field line to drive in two more runs, which stretched it to 4-0.

For its part, Omaha put runners in scoring position in the first inning with singles by Taylor and Gruber, but SDSU worked its out of the jam with a double play. In the second, the Mavericks loaded the bases with a Caniglia double to the left center wall and walks by freshmen Jack Kalina and Riley Herold, but SDSU contained the threat by getting a Taylor on a flyout.

Another Jackrabbit run came across in the fourth for a five-run margin. Wenninger led off with a double down the left field line and later scored on a Jacobson sacrifice fly to right. In the sixth, SDSU added another run when Velez's leadoff homer to left resulted in a 6-0 tally.

SDSU capped its scoring in the seventh, with an RBI single to right by Velez plating Jesse Munsterman. Cody Sharrow followed with an RBI single to left that scored Newt Johnson, bringing the score to 8-0. Omaha, meanwhile, was quiet for the last four innings, as McAffer allowed his final Maverick hit -- a Gruber single -- in the fifth.
