Box Score PAPILLION, Neb. -- The Omaha baseball team took on Air Force Tuesday afternoon, triumphing 7-4 at Werner Park. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 20-20 on the season, while the Falcons dropped to 20-17.
The victory went to sophomore right-hander
Corey Binger (5-3), who held Air Force to two singles and a walk over 4.0 innings with two strikeouts. The loss went to Tyler Mortenson (2-1), who gave up two runs -- one earned -- on one hit while walking five and punching out two in 3.0 innings. Sophomore right-hander
Ryan Cate buckled down for his fifth save of the season, limiting the Falcons to one hit and one walk with two strikeouts over 2.1 shutout innings to close the game.
Offensively, senior
Collin Leif was 2-for-3 and scored three times for the day. Senior
Clayton Taylor was also 2-for-5 with an RBI, and freshman
Grant Suponchick drove in a pair of runs as well. Senior
Alex Schultz drew four walks for the afternoon and finished 1-for-1 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Omaha built an early lead, as Suponchick's RBI groundout scored Schultz in the bottom of the first. The Mavericks added to that with another run in the third, when a bases-loaded balk brought in Schultz for a 2-0 advantage.
UNO put up two more runs in the fourth with three hits and a Falcon error. With two outs, Leif singled to left, then advanced to second on a wild pitch before scoring on Schultz's RBI single to right. Senior
Cole Gruber followed by reaching on a fielding miscue, and a bunt single by Taylor loaded the bases after that. Suponchick then worked a full-count walk to score Schultz, pushing the lead to 4-0.
The Mavericks notched another pair of runs in the fifth, spurred by consecutive walks by freshman
Riley Herold, Leif and Schultz to pack the bags again. Gruber was then hit by a pitch to drive in Herold, and following a pitching change, Taylor came through with an RBI single to left, which plated Leif to make it 6-0.
Air Force broke up the shutout in the seventh, using six hits and an error to score four runs that trimmed Omaha's lead to 6-4. One came courtesy of a single by Shaun Mize and an error on the same play, then two via Spencer Draws' two-run double to left and the final tally on an RBI single by Tyler Zabojnik.
The Mavericks came back for one last run in the bottom half of the frame, when Leif singled through the left side and later scored as Taylor reached on a fielding error. The 7-4 lead held through the final two innings, as the Falcons mustered just one single from Cate.
