OMAHA, Neb. -- Former Omaha men's basketball player CJ Carter has signed a contract to play professionally for MZT Skopje Aerodrom, it was announced this week. MZT Skopje is a basketball club in the Prva Liga (Macedonian First League), the highest professional league in Republic of Macedonia.

Carter, a guard from Omaha Benson, was a four-year starter in the Omaha program from 2011 to 2015. As a senior, he was named second-team All-Summit and averaged 16.9 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.7 blocks per game. Carter capped his four-year Maverick career as UNO's fifth-best all-time scorer with 1,502 points, and he was seventh for career field goals made (533) and assists (343), eighth for steals (149), 10th for 3-pointers made (142) and 18th for blocks (40).

Over his last three weeks trying out for the club, Carter has averaged 7.3 points, 3.0 assists, 4.7 assists and 2.3 steals over 23.0 minutes per contest.

"It feels like this opportunity has been a long time coming," Carter said. "I just kept being patient and waiting for my time. I never could have imagined at the age of 17 that I'd have the opportunity to Division I basketball in my hometown, then go on to play professional basketball. This is a blessing from God, and I'm living my dream."

Carter graduated with his bachelor's degree in general studies from UNO in August 2015.

"We're thrilled that CJ has earned the chance to play professionally and sign a contract with MZT Skopje," head coach Derrin Hansen said. "CJ was at the forefront of our program during its Division I transition, and it's no surprise that his success as a student-athlete has translated into more opportunities as a professional.
