Mavericks Down North Dakota State, 76-69

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha men's basketball team picked up its second consecutive home triumph Saturday afternoon, defeating North Dakota State 76-69 at Baxter Arena. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 17-10 (9-4 Summit League) and swept the season series with the Bison, while NDSU dropped to 16-10 (6-6 Summit League).

Senior forward Jake White led the way with game highs of 23 points and seven rebounds while adding an assist and a steal. The Chaska, Minn., native shot 10-of-14 from the field for his 10th 20-point scoring effort of the season.

Senior guard Devin Patterson added 16 points, and junior guard Tra-Deon Hollins had 14 points, six assists, four steals and four boards while shooting 6-of-10 with two 3-pointers. Sophomore forward Tre'Shawn Thurman also had a double-figure scoring afternoon, posting 10 points with three rebounds.

As a team, UNO shot 48 percent (29-of-61) from the field, 31 percent (5-of-16) from three and 77 percent (13-of-17) at the free throw line. NDSU finished at 53 percent (27-of-51) from the floor, 41 percent (7-of-17) behind the arc and 53 percent (8-of-15) at the stripe. The Bison outrebounded Omaha 31-28, while the Mavericks forced 17 turnovers while committing just nine of their own and scoring 19 points off miscues.

North Dakota State had two double-figure scorers for the day, with 21 points from Khy Kabellis and another 18 points and six rebounds from Kory Brown.

UNO struck early, opening to a 6-0 lead to start the game. After a Brown dunk helped NDSU it at 11-11, seven Patterson points spurred a 10-1 Omaha run over the next 3:51 to give the Mavericks a 21-13 lead. Kabellis then went on a tear for NDSU, pouring in seven points over the next two minutes, including a 3-pointer that pulled the Bison within three at 25-22 at 7:10.

From there, a 7-0 scoring stretch gave NDSU their first lead at 29-27 on a Chris Kading three and a Brown layup. But a White layup and a Hollins triple put Omaha ahead again, 32-29, and the Mavericks held on to their lead for a 34-31 advantage by halftime.

In the second half, the Mavericks shot 53 percent from the floor and were paced by 10 points from White, who shot 5-for-6, and 11 more from Hollins, who was 5-for-7. NDSU tied it at 36-36 on a Brown triple 58 seconds in, but the Mavericks came back with a White jumper plus a steal and a layup from Hollins to shoot ahead 40-36. A 10-0 surge then helped Omaha go up 50-38 with 14:27 left, and the Mavericks eventually took their largest lead, 62-49, when senior guard Kyler Erickson canned a 3-pointer with 7:45 to go.

Though NDSU went 10-for-10 from the field in the final 10 minutes of the game, Omaha never allowed the Bison to pull any closer than five at 71-66 on a Carlin Dupree jumper with 1:04 to go. The Mavericks finished it off with a Hollins layup and free throws from Erickson and Patterson en route to the 76-69 victory.

Omaha returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 17, starting its final regular-season road trip with a visit to IUPUI. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. (CT) at Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis, Ind., and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
