Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha men's basketball team made its home debut Saturday afternoon, falling 100-87 to Rice at Baxter Arena. The Mavericks are now 1-3 (0-0 Summit League) on the season, while the Owls improve to 2-1 (0-0 Conference USA).
Senior guard Tra-Deon Hollins paced UNO with a season-best 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting, adding nine assists, four steals and two rebounds. Sophomore forward Mitch Hahn finished with a season-high-tying 15 points off the bench, hitting 5-of-7 from the field with a pair of threes.
Junior guard Daniel Norl canned three 3-pointers in reserve to add a season-high 11 points, and sophomore guard Zach Jackson had 10 points with three boards. Junior forward Daniel Meyer led the Mavericks on the glass, tallying season bests of six caroms and eight points.
Rice was led by 29 points from Marcus Evans, who hit four 3-pointers. Marcus Jackson added 19 points with another four 3-pointers, and Egor Koulechov and Connor Cashaw added 15 points apiece. Koulechov also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
As a team, the Owls shot .633 (31-of-49) from the field -- the highest of any opponent since Omaha moved into Baxter Arena in 2015-16 -- and .667 (14-of-21) from long range. They also had the advantage in rebounding, 33-26, and assists, 22-13.
Rice led nearly the entire first half, opening the game with three early 3-pointers from Jackson, Koulechov and Cashaw. Down by as much as seven, the Mavericks clawed back with two by 8:15 thanks to a triple from senior guard Marcus Tyus and a dunk by sophomore center Zach Pirog, then tied it at 26-all with a pair of free throws from Norl at 6:25.
A pair of key steals by Hollins led to back-to-back UNO buckets and helped put Omaha on an 8-0 run that gave it its largest lead of the game, 37-29, with 3:20 till the break. In the final minute, free throws by Andrew Drone put the Owls up by one before a jumper by senior guard Kyler Erickson made it 41-40. Jackson hit one last three for Rice with six seconds on the clock, giving the Owls a 43-41 edge going into the locker room.
In the second half, Zach Jackson buried a quick three to put Omaha ahead 44-43, but Rice came out firing, hitting 14-of-15 from the field to spur a 20-4 stretch. The Owls took their largest lead of the game on a Corey Douglas layup, which pushed them ahead 81-62 with 10:32 left. Omaha never cut the margin to single digits, as Rice went on to defeat the Mavericks, 100-87.
