Box Score MANHATTAN, Kan. -- The Omaha men's basketball team closed its first road trip of the season Tuesday night, falling 81-68 to Kansas State at Bramlage Coliseum. After three games in four days to open the 2016-17 season, the Mavericks are 1-2 (0-0 Summit League), while the Wildcats improve to 2-0 (0-0 Big 12).
Senior guard Tra-Deon Hollins scored a team-leading 12 points, adding six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Sophomore guard Zach Jackson added 11 points with a team-high eight rebounds, two steals and a block, and junior forward Tre'Shawn Thurman chipped in 10 points and six boards.
Kansas State fired at a .508 clip (32-of-63) for the night while holding the Mavericks to .400 (22-of-55). Four Wildcats finished in double figures: Barry Brown (15 points), Wesley Iwundu (14), Kamau Stokes (14) and D.J. Johnson (11). Carlbe Ervin pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
Starting with a steal and a layup by Tyus in the first 30 seconds and then capitalizing on three early Wildcat turnovers, Omaha took an 11-2 lead to open the game. The Mavericks slipped into a 6:49 scoring drought though, allowing K-State go on a 23-2 run for a 25-13 advantage at 9:01. A pair of free throws by senior guard Kyler Erickson finally ended UNO's scoreless spell, and a 3-pointer by sophomore forward Mitch Hahn made it 27-18 by the 7:20 mark.
A steal and a three-point play by Hollins later cut the Wildcat lead to 33-25 with under four minutes to halftime. Hollins, who accounted for nine of the Mavericks' last 13 points of the half, tossed in one more layup before the break, at which point Omaha trailed 42-31.
K-State shot .548 (17-of-31) from the floor in the first half, converting nine Maverick turnovers into 19 points. The Wildcats had three-double figures scorers by the break, as Johnson, Brown and Iwundu combined for 33 of KSU's 42 first-half points.
In the second half, KSU opened on a 9-0 run with a trio of threes between Stokes and Xavier Sneed, which helped the Wildcats to a 55-36 advantage by 14:31. Five minutes later, K-State took its largest lead of the game at 72-46 courtesy of a Dean Wade 3-pointer that capped an 8-1 run. The Wildcats finished the night with a final tally of 81-68.
