Omaha Falls in Sweep at South Dakota

Box Score VERMILLION, S.D. -- The Omaha volleyball team took on conference leader South Dakota Friday night, falling 3-0 (17-25, 17-25, 16-25) at Sanford Coyote Sports Center. The Mavericks are now 5-20 (2-9 Summit League) on the year, while the Coyotes improve to 20-4 (9-1).

Senior Nicki Carson led the Mavericks with team highs of nine kills and 14 digs, and freshman Chloe Dousette matched her offensively with nine more kills, as well as a pair of blocks.

Freshman Hannah Angeli put up 26 assists, eight digs and two blocks for the night, and freshman Daria Taylor added two more blocks with three kills. Freshman Olivia Spanton had a double-figure dig effort, posting 12.

Audrey Reeg led South Dakota with 13 kills on .333 hitting, while Rachel Schmidt had eight more and Lindsey Brown tallied another seven while attacking at a .778 clip. As a team, the Coyotes hit .271 to Omaha's .109.

UNO trailed the entire first set, and Dousette and Carson paced the Mavericks with four kills apiece. South Dakota built its largest lead at 22-13 after back-to-back kills by Brown and Reeg, then won the game with a 25-17 decision.

The second set included five ties up to a 12-12 lock, after which South Dakota used consecutive blocks by Elizabeth Loschen and Meagan Kerns and a Schmidt kill to take the lead for good. Omaha got within one three times -- at 16-15 on two Dousette kills, at 16-15 with a block from Dousette and Taylor and one last time at 17-16 on a Carson kill -- but the Coyotes pulled away with a closing 8-1 run to win 25-17.

South Dakota led early in set three, going up 9-4 before Omaha took its first timeout. Facing a nine-point deficit at 15-6, the Mavericks managed to trim the Coyote lead to 15-9 with back-to-back USD errors and a Conlin/Angeli block. After South Dakota went up 17-11 on a Reeg kill, UNO made it a four-point margin thanks to kills by Carson and Taylor. South Dakota, however, finished on an 8-3 run, claiming the set at 25-16.

Omaha returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 29, visiting North Dakota State at Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. Links to live stats and video will be available on OMavs.com.
