OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha swimming & diving team opened the home portion of its schedule Saturday afternoon, falling to Big 12 foe Iowa State, 154-85, at HPER Pool.
The Mavericks won three individual events on the afternoon.
Junior Olivia McLain swam to an off-event victory in the 100 fly, touching the wall at 58.97 – the second-fastest time for a Maverick this year. Freshman Lizzy Giese also impressed, as the Coon Rapids, Minn., native finished second in the same race at 1:00.89.
Senior Morgan Stepp added a victory in the 500 free, pushing to a season-best finish of 5:09.71 – more than 9.5 seconds faster than the second-place finisher from Iowa State.
Junior Tiril Jensen raced to an individual victory in her specialty event, the 100 breast (1:07.70). Stepp finished third with a time of 1:09.69.
Omaha had a 2-3 finish in the 200 free relay, as the quartet of freshmen Anna Capoun and Rachel Morrow, sophomore Kirsten Kracke and senior Mackenzie Ritter took the runner-up spot with a time of 1:41.24. Finishing immediately after in third (1:42.97) was the foursome of McLain, sophomores Kylene Abraham and Kylie Vermeire and freshman Brook Landt.
"I'm very proud of our swimmers and divers today for their performance against Iowa State," head coach Todd Samland said. "It's been a demanding two-week cycle, yet we still performed well at the end of our races.”
The Mavericks return to action on Saturday, Oct. 29, when they host Northern Iowa at 1 p.m. at HPER Pool.
