South Dakota Tops Mavericks, 3-1

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha volleyball team dropped a match in conference play Friday night, falling 3-1 (16-25, 25-19, 16-25, 15-25) to Summit League leader South Dakota at Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks are now 4-17 (1-6 Summit League), while the Coyotes improve to 18-3 (7-0).

Freshman Chloe Dousette led UNO in kills for the third straight match, finishing with 11 while hitting a season-high .400. It marked her fourth double-figure kill performance of the year.

Junior Sydney O'Shaughnessy just missed a double-double, recording team highs of 34 assists and nine digs and adding two service aces and two blocks. Freshman Hannah Angeli also had eight kills, eight digs, a pair of blocks and an ace.

Defensively, freshman Olivia Spanton matched O'Shaughnessy with a team-best nine digs, and freshman Ellie Brown put up a match-high four blocks.

As a team, Omaha outblocked USD 6.0 to 4.0, while the Coyotes had the edge in hitting, .330 to .151. South Dakota was led by a double-double from Audrey Reeg, who had 19 kills and 12 digs with .457 hitting.

USD and UNO played to an 8-8 tie in the first set, after which the Coyotes broke through with a 4-0 run to prompt an Omaha timeout. From there, South Dakota worked to a 19-11 advantage on the back of Lauren Mattison, who notched two aces over six straight serves. The Coyotes, who hit .480 for the game, eventually took the set 25-16.

Omaha barreled back in the second game, holding the edge in blocking -- 3.0-1.0 -- and hitting -- .226 to .138 – courtesy of five kills from Angeli. Midway through the set, the Mavericks battled past a 10-10 lock on back-to-back kills from Angeli and junior Amanda Conlin, then extended the lead to 15-11 after another Angeli kill, a Conlin ace and a USD attack error.

After the Coyotes cut it to two at 16-14, an Elise Brown kill, a USD ball handling error and a block by O'Shaughnessy and Ellie Brown spurred UNO to a 19-14 lead and forced a Coyote timeout. The Mavericks later built their largest lead at 23-17 thanks to an O'Shaughnessy ace, and consecutive kills by Dousette and Elise Brown later capped the game at 25-19 and tied the match at 1-1.

South Dakota led nearly all of the third game, however, bolstered by .321 hitting as a team and six kills from Reeg. The Coyotes took the set 25-16 to gain a 2-1 advantage in the match.

USD hit .400 in game four and again led the majority of the set. The Coyotes took their largest lead at 19-9 and went on to win the set, 25-15, and the match, 3-1.

Omaha returns to action this Sunday, Oct. 16 against North Dakota State at Sapp Fieldhouse at 2 p.m., and the match will include a special presentation of the Mavericks' 1996 national championship team. Links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.
