Mavericks Drop 3-0 Decision at South Dakota State

Box Score BROOKINGS, S.D. -- The Omaha volleyball team kicked off its first conference roadtrip Friday evening, falling 3-0 (23-25, 21-25, 22-25) to South Dakota State at Frost Arena. The Mavericks are now 3-15 (0-4 Summit League) on the season, while the Jackrabbits improve to 2-12 (1-1).

Freshman Hannah Angeli had her fifth double-double performance of the season, totaling team highs of 15 kills and 16 digs, plus a block and an ace, with .371 hitting.

Junior Sydney O'Shaughnessy finished with a match-high 35 assists alongside seven digs and two blocks, while freshmen Olivia Spanton and Ashley Smith both had double-figure defensive efforts with 13 and 10 digs, respectively. Spanton chipped a pair of service aces for the night as well.

Sophomore Kayla Torson also added eight kills with six digs and a block, and senior Elise Brown notched six kills while attacking at a .500 clip. Freshman Ellie Brown led the Mavericks at the net, totaling three blocks.

South Dakota State was led by 15 kills and four blocks from Ashley Beaner and another 10 kills from Makenzie Hennen. Mattison Munger had a double-double on 33 assists and 10 digs, and Ellie Benson had a match-high 24 digs for the Jackrabbits.

Down 6-2 to start the match, Omaha rattled off six unanswered points to go ahead 8-6 before SDSU called a timeout. The two teams reached a 9-9 tie after back-to-back kills by Beaner and Hennen, then traded scores to bring it to a 21-21 lock on a Conlin kill for the 13th tie of the set. SDSU then took advantage of two Maverick attack errors and added a Hennen kill to make it 24-22. After a Torson kill brought UNO within one, SDSU eked out a 25-23 win on a final kill by Beaner, which was her ninth of the game.

South Dakota State broke past an early 5-5 deadlock in set two, building a 10-5 lead after a 5-0 run. The Mavericks then went on an 8-2 spurt of their own to go ahead 13-12, but the battle continued as nine more ties brought the set to 21-21, the last thanks to an Angeli kill. The Jackrabbits, however, used three kills by Hennen and Mattison Munger, plus a block by Beaner and Mikala Hora, to close the set at 25-21.

An even game three included six more ties and four lead changes. Omaha worked past a 20-20 stall to go ahead by two on consecutive kills from Angeli and Torson, which forced a Jackrabbit timeout. Out of the break, SDSU pulled within one on a UNO service error and followed with kills from Ashlynn Smith and Nazya Thies, prompting Omaha to call a timeout of its own. But the Jacks capitalized on a pair of Maverick attack errors on the next two plays, finishing the set on a 5-0 run to win it 25-22 for the sweep.

Omaha returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 2, traveling to Oral Roberts. The match is set for 1:30 p.m. in Tulsa, Okla., and links to live stats and video will be available on OMavs.com.
