BROOKING, S.D. – The Omaha swimming & diving team opened its final road trip of the 2015-16 season, taking 11 of 16 events en route to a 174.5-123.5 victory over South Dakota State Friday evening.
A trio of swimmers paced Omaha on the evening, combining for seven of the 11 event victories. Junior Morgan Stepp led the charge, winning a team-high three events (200 breast, 200 IM, 200 fly). Both senior Natalie Renshaw (200 back, 200 free) and freshman Kylie Vermeire (500 free, 1000 fee) won a pair of events as well.
Stepp dazzled in the 200 fly, finishing with a season-best time of 2:05.69 – nearly four seconds better than the second-place finisher. The junior from Parker, Colo., also triumphed in the 200 breast (2:22.82) and the 200 IM (2:07.33).
Renshaw, a local product from Millard North, had success in a pair of 200-yard events. The senior pulled in victories in the 200 free (1:53.53) and the 200 back (2:07.32).
Vermeire started off the evening by tackling the competition in the 1,000 free, finishing with a victorious time of 10:39.76. The Marshall, Minn., native also took the top spot in the 500 free (5:13.87).
Senior diver Miranda Knipfer edged out a one-point win in the 3-meter dive, tallying a six-dive total score of 217.20.
Senior Hannah Johnson narrowly escaped with the victory in the 100 free, finishing two-tenths of a second ahead of the second-place swimmer (54.13). Sophomore Olivia McLain also saw success in the 100 fly, as she won the event with a time of 58.92.
Finally, the foursome of Renshaw, Johnson, McLain and sophomore Cassie Jahn dominated the 400 free relay (3:34,59), placing first at more than four seconds ahead of the field.
Omaha has a quick turnaround for its regular-season finale, as the team will journey to Lawrence, Kan., for a dual at Kansas on Saturday, Jan. 30. The event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN3 and TWC. A link to the live stream will be available on OMavs.com.
