Box Score 2 MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Omaha volleyball team battled through five sets for a 3-2 win over Evansville (21-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-18, 15-8) Saturday morning, then fell 3-0 to Central Michigan (21-25, 23-25, 19-25) in the evening match at the CMU Chippewa Challenge. The Mavericks are now 5-8 on the season heading into Summit League play next weekend.
Sophomore
Sydney O'Shaughnessy was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 9.00 assists, 1.83 digs and 0.67 blocks per set over three matches for the weekend.
MATCH 1 -- OMAHA 3, EVANSVILLE 2In the first match of the day, a gritty effort gave Omaha its second five-set win of the season.
Senior middle blocker
Megan Schmale led four Mavericks with double-figure kill efforts, totaling 15 kills on .448 hitting with seven digs and a match-best eight blocks. Senior rightside hitter
Michaela Schimmer added 13 kills, while senior outside hitter
Kelley Wollak earned her sixth double-double of the year with 12 kills and 12 digs. Senior middle blocker
Amy Taylor rounded it out with 11 kills in addition to four blocks.
O'Shaughnessy finished with a match-high 46 assists, six digs and six blocks, all while guiding UNO to hit .204 to UE's .092. Defensively, senior libero
Kimberly Bailey tallied a career-high 31 digs, and freshman defensive specialist
Jessica Plake had a season-high 20. Freshman outside hitter
Gessica Gdowski finished just shy of a double-double with nine kills and 11 digs, both season highs.
Evansville was led by three players with double-figure kills: Genesis Miranda (18), Mildrelis Rodriguez (11) and Stephanie Cerino (10). Miranda added 16 digs and Rodriguez had 20 as both achieved double-doubles.
Evansville picked up a win in the first set, 25-21, to take a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks evened the match in set two, starting with a 9-3 lead that was sparked by three early Schmale kills. The Purple Aces pulled within two at 11-9, but UNO surged again to a 15-9 advantage on a Gdowski kill, a Schmale/O'Shaughnessy block and a service ace from Plake. Evansville made it a one-point game at 16-15 to prompt an Omaha timeout, then twice more at 18-17 and 20-19. Three straight Maverick kills from Taylor, Schmale and Gdowski finally put the momentum in UNO's favor, and a Schimmer kill with a UE attack error gave Omaha the set at 25-20.
The third game went in UE's favor, 25-19, putting the pressure on Omaha in the fourth set. The Mavericks snapped a 12-12 tie by scoring on four straight plays, punctuated with a Schmale/O'Shaughnessy stop at the net. From the 16-13 juncture, Omaha built a 24-13 lead with a rapid 8-0 run, which included kills from Taylor and Schimmer. The Purple Aces responded with four consecutive points of their own, but Wollak put it away with one last kill, giving Omaha the 25-18 win and tying the match at 2-2.
In the deciding set, UNO never trailed, opening with three straight kills from Schimmer and Gdowski. The Mavericks doubled their lead at 6-3, 8-4 and 5-10, the last pushing Evansville to call a timeout. Out of the break, Taylor and O'Shaughnessy put down a block, Taylor posted a solo stop and Wollak added a kill to make it 13-5. Two plays later, Taylor had another kill, and after Evansville's final two scores, Schimmer put it away with the last kill of the match for a 15-8 Maverick victory.
MATCH 2 -- CENTRAL MICHIGAN 3, OMAHA 0Wollak paced Omaha in the nightcap against the tournament host, totaling 10 kills with five digs. Taylor added eight kills on .571 hitting with no attack errors, and Schmale had seven kills with a match-high five blocks.
O'Shaughnessy finished with 28 kills, and Bailey and Plake matched each other with 10 digs apiece.
Central Michigan was led by Jordan Bueter, who had 12 kills on .440 hitting. As a team, CMU hit .271 to Omaha's .196 and narrowly outblocked the Mavericks, 6-5.
The Chippewas rallied out of a 16-16 tie to take the first set, 25-21. The second game saw another late tie, as CMU worked past the 22-22 stall to seize the set 25-23, despite Omaha hitting at its highest clip of the night, .341. The Mavericks threatened late once more in game three, pulling within two at 21-19, but Central Michigan earned win at 25-19 en route to the sweep.
Omaha returns to action next Friday, Sept. 25, beginning Summit League play with a trip to South Dakota State. The match is set for 7 p.m. in Brookings, S.D., and links to live stats and video will be available on OMavs.com.
