Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Omaha volleyball team closed out its weekend at the Kangaroo Klassic Saturday afternoon, falling 3-1 (25-14, 21-25, 17-25, 17-25) to UMKC at Swinney Recreation Center. After their third week of play, the Mavericks are now 4-6 on the season, while the 'Roos improve to 6-3.
Senior outside hitter
Kelley Wollak led UNO offensively with 14 kills and 18 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Sophomore setter
Sydney O'Shaughnessy also had a double-double -- her team-leading eighth of the year -- with a match-high 36 assists and 16 digs.
Senior middle blocker
Amy Taylor joined Wollak with a double-figure effort, finishing with a season-high 11 kills in addition to three blocks. Senior libero
Kimberly Bailey added 17 digs, and sophomore outside hitter
Mackenzie Horkey had 13. Horkey and senior middle blocker
Megan Schmale also had seven kills and three blocks apiece.
For their weekend performances, Wollak and Taylor were both named to the all-tournament team.
UMKC was led by 16 kills from Jessica Hendin. Sydney Crimmins (13 kills/26 digs), Kaylyn Brandt (23 assists/12 digs) and Taryn Miller (11 assists/19 digs) posted double-doubles.
As a team, Omaha hit .147 to UMKC's .236 for the afternoon and trailed the 'Roos in team blocking, 10-7.
The Mavericks had their best team hitting percentage in the opening set at .238 while holding UMKC to .043. Three straight UMKC attack errors and Wollak's first of six kills in the set created a fast 4-0 lead, and they extended it to 14-9 before the 'Roos took their first timeout. A Taylor/Wollak block and two more Wollak kills gave Omaha its largest lead at 23-13, and a Taylor solo block coupled with an O'Shaughnessy ace guided UNO to the 25-14 game one win.
UMKC came back with a .381 attacking effort in the second set though, helped by six kills from Crimmins, who hit .385. The 'Roos broke past an early 7-7 tie and went on to capture game two, 25-21. Hendin then combined for 11 kills over the third and fourth sets for UMKC, which won both games by identical scores of 25-17 and seized the match at 3-1.
Omaha returns to action next weekend at the Central Michigan Chippewa Invite in Mount Pleasant, Mich. The Mavericks open on Friday, Sept. 18 with San Jose State at 3:30 p.m. CT, followed by two matches on Saturday, Sept. 19 with Evansville at 9 a.m. CT and host Central Michigan at 6:30 p.m. CT.
