Wollak Joins 1,000 Kill Club As Mavs Win Two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Senior outside hitter Kelley Wollak passed the 1,000 career kills milestone as the Omaha volleyball team recorded two wins at the UMKC Kangaroo Klassic Friday at Swinney Recreation Center. Improving to 4-5 on the season, Omaha defeated SIUE in a 3-2 comeback (23-25, 18-25, 25-13, 25-14, 15-8) and Bradley 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-13).

Wollak became the 19th player in school history – and the first in the Division I era -- to reach 1,000 career kills. The Bloomington, Minn., native entered the weekend at 990 kills, and she hit No. 1,000 just two plays into the third set against SIUE in the morning match. Wollak finished with 17 kills against SIUE and another eight against Bradley in the afternoon, bringing her career total to 1,015 by the end of the day.

“This was a great milestone for Kelley to hit today,” head coach Rose Shires said. “She has been a cornerstone player and a leader throughout our program's transition, and we are so proud of everything she has accomplished so far in her career at Omaha.”

MATCH 1 -- OMAHA 3, SIUE 2
Wollak's 17 kills led Omaha in the opening match, followed closely with another 16 from senior middle blocker Megan Schmale, who hit at a .500 clip. Sophomore Sydney O'Shaughnessy grabbed a double-double with 44 assists and 14 digs.

Senior libero Kimberly Bailey added 17 digs, and sophomore outside hitter Mackenzie Horkey also finished in double figures with 11 digs. Senior rightside hitter Michaela Schimmer and senior middle blocker Diane Banderas, the latter making her season debut, matched each other with a team-leading five blocks apiece.

As a team, UNO outhit SIUE .199 to .119. The match proved a battle at the net, as the Cougars totaled 11 digs to Omaha's 10.

The Mavericks found themselves in a 2-0 hole after SIUE won the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-18. After the Cougars won the first point of the third game, Omaha never looked back and held SIUE to -.062 hitting. The Mavericks surged to an 8-5 lead and forced a Cougar timeout, then stretched it to 16-9 before SIUE called another. Leading 18-13, Omaha went on a 7-0 tear to end the set with a 25-13 victory.

UNO never trailed in the fourth game, quickly running up a commanding 12-2 lead with a 7-0 run on three blocks, three kills, an ace and two SIUE attack errors. The Mavericks doubled up the Cougars when a Schimmer kill made it 20-9. Two late kills by Wollak then sealed game four in Omaha's favor, 25-14. UNO hit .481 with just one error for the set and capitalized on SIUE's .065 effort with eight attacking miscues, while also outblocking the Cougars 4-0.

Staring down a 2-2 tie, Omaha headed to the fifth set and continued its dominant effort by outhitting SIUE .200 to -.053. Once again, the Mavericks never trailed and opened with a fast 4-0 lead on two straight Schmale kills, then Schmale/Horkey and Schmale/Schimmer blocks. The Cougars pulled within one at 6-5, but Omaha responded with a 6-1 run punctuated by back-to-back Wollak kills that made it 12-6. A Horkey/Banderas block then brought it to match point at 14-7, and following a Cougar kill, an SIUE attack error gave UNO the win at 15-8.

MATCH 2 -- OMAHA 3, BRADLEY 0
Schimmer paced Omaha in the second match, totaling 13 kills on .424 hitting. O'Shaughnessy nabbed her team-leading seventh double-double of the season on match highs of 35 assists and 12 digs, and Bailey was close behind with 11 digs of her own. Schmale led the Mavericks at the net with eight blocks for the night.

In the opening set, Omaha broke past a 3-3 tie and went up by two with three consecutive kills from Schimmer, Horkey and senior middle blocker Amy Taylor. The Mavericks shot out to a 15-9 lead with another Schimmer kill, then made it 11-19 with a Schmale/Horkey block that forced a BU timeout. The lead was stretched to 10 with an ace by freshman defensive specialist Jessica Plake and another Schmale/Horkey stop at the net to make it 21-11. Wollak had the final word in the set, finishing the game with a kill at 25-16.

Bradley led early in game two before Omaha tied it at 11-11 on back-to-back kills from Taylor and Schimmer. The Braves then regained the lead until UNO knotted it once more at 22-22 on a BU attack error. The score stalled again at 23-23 and 24-24 thanks to kills from Taylor and Schimmer, and the Mavericks rapidly closed in with back-to-back kills from Schmale and Horkey to take the set 26-24.

Game three was all Omaha, as the Mavericks hit .353 as a team and outblocked the Braves 4-1. A fast start to the set spotted UNO a 10-2 advantage. Later, Schmale was part of three straight blocks with Wollak and O'Shaughnessy, followed by a Horkey ace, making it 18-5. Omaha used kills from Horkey and Schimmer in three of the final four plays of the match, capturing the 25-13 set win and the 3-0 sweep.

UNO returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 12, closing the Kangaroo Klassic with host UMKC at 1:30 p.m. at Swinney Recreation Center. Links to live stats and live video will be available on OMavs.com.
