Box Score MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – An unranked Marquette team handed the No. 22 Omaha men's soccer team its first loss since Nov. 1, 2014 when it staged a 1-0 upset of the Mavericks in non-conference action Friday evening at Valley Fields in Milwaukee.
The Mavericks drop to 4-1-0 overall. The Golden Eagles improved to 3-1-1 on the season.
Marquette junior Jake Taylor came away with the game winner in the 85th minute when he gathered a misplayed free kick and tapped in the game's lone goal.
Omaha had two close chances in the first half. The first came in the 4th minute when Emir Alihodzic took a shot that was pushed over the cross bar by Golden Eagle goalkeeper Luis Barraza. The other chance came when a Fazlo Alihodzic free kick found its way under the Marquette wall, but was saved by Barraza.
The second half saw Omaha come out strong and force Marquette on its heels. The Mavericks controlled possession for a majority of the half, but the Golden Eagles staved off the UNO attack. Omaha looked to have the game's first goal in the 71st minute when a Logan Mendez corner kick found the head of Denzel Woods, but a Golden Eagle defender blocked the shot. Mark Moulton looked to have a golden opportunity in the 73rd minute, but Barraza again came up with a save.
Following the Golden Eagles' goal, the Mavericks had a chance to secure the equalizer in the 89th minute. Lalo Gamboa directed a header towards the left post that looked to be going in until the Marquette goalkeeper made a diving save to secure the win.
Omaha held a 12-9 advantage in shots with Emir Alihodzic and Lalo Gamboa each having three. Marquette's David Selvaggi had a team high three shots. Maverick goalkeeper Joseph Ghitis made two saves, while his counterpart Barraza made five.
