Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Omaha volleyball team closed the UNLV Invitational Saturday, falling 3-0 (21-25, 21-25, 20-25) to host UNLV and 3-2 (25-15, 22-25, 17-25, 25-20, 12-15) to Central Arkansas at Cox Pavilion. The Mavericks are now 1-2 (0-0 Summit League) on the season.
MATCH 1 -- UNLV 3, OMAHA 0
Senior outside hitter Kelley Wollak, who was named to the all-tournament team, led the first match with 14 kills, hitting .414 while adding nine digs. Senior middle blocker Megan Schmale added nine kills, two aces and a team-best two blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Mackenzie Horkey had six kills and eight digs. Sophomore setter Sydney O'Shaughnessy finished with 13 assists and eight digs with two kills and a block.
UNLV was led by 13 kills from Ceannia Kincade and another 11 from Bree Hammel. The Rebels outhit Omaha .316 to .224, but UNO finished with two blocks to UNLV's one.
MATCH 2 -- CENTRAL ARKANSAS 3, OMAHA 2
In a hard-fought second match, three Mavericks finished with double-doubles: O'Shaughnessy (46 assists/11 digs), Wollak (19 kills/11 digs) and Horkey (11 kills/16 digs). Senior rightside hitter Michaela Schimmer narrowly missed a double-double of her own, recording nine kills and 17 digs, while Schmale added 11 kills for the night. Senior middle blocker Amy Taylor led the way at the net with four blocks, and senior libero Kimberly Bailey paced UNO defensively with 13 digs.
Central Arkansas was sparked by Heather Schnars, who had a double-double on 20 kills and 16 digs. Fulani Petties added 14 kills as well.
As a team, UNO outhit UCA, .200 to .194.
The Mavericks never trailed in the opening set, going up 8-4 on a Wollak kill and a Taylor/Schimmer block. Omaha then took a substantial 18-12 lead with the help of back-to-back kills from Horkey and Wollak and three straight Bear errors. Another Wollak kill made it 20-14 and pushed Central Arkansas to a second timeout. The Bears then committed two more errors, and combined with a Bailey ace, a Wollak kill and a Schimmer/Schmale block, Omaha clinched the first game at 25-15.
Central Arkansas led most of the second set, evening the match at 1-1. Omaha pulled within one nine times before tying it at 18-18 on two Horkey kills and an O'Shaughnessy/Schmale block. The Bears then capitalized on three UNO errors to go up 21-18, but Omaha made it a one-point game three more times, the last on an O'Shaughnessy kill. UCA, however, used a Maverick service error and one last kill to finish it off, taking the game at 25-22.
The third game was tight from the start, pushing to a 9-9 tie. From there, the Bears went on an 11-2 run, which was broken up by back-to-back kills from Wollak and Schmale to make it 20-13. UCA held off Omaha by at least six for the remainder of the set, going on to a 24-17 win.
Trailing early in the fourth game, Omaha got within one at 10-11 on two straight kills from Taylor and Schmale. Spurred by a 6-1 run, UNO finally regained the lead at 18-15, then stretched it to a 21-16 lead on a Schimmer kill. After three consecutive UCA points cut it to 23-20, Horkey and Schmale each put down a kill, and a Schmale/Horkey block closed it in the Mavs' favor, 25-20.
In the decisive fifth set, Central Arkansas overcame an early 3-0 UNO advantage with a 7-1 run that made it 7-4. Kills by Horkey and Schimmer, as well as a Horkey ace, then got the Mavericks within one at 9-8. After making it a one-point game again at 11-10, two Wollak kills put Omaha on top, 12-11. UCA, however, seized momentum with a 4-0 run, taking the game 15-12 and the match 3-2.
Omaha returns to action Sept. 4-5, hosting the Omaha Classic at Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks open Friday with North Dakota at 6:30 p.m., followed by Saturday matches against Drake at 12:30 p.m. and Central Florida at 6:30 p.m. Links to live stats and video will be available on OMavs.com.
