Mavericks Cap Tour of Italy, Defeat Luiss 81-41

ROME, Italy -- The competitive portion of the Omaha men's basketball team's tour through Italy concluded Friday evening, as the Mavericks defeated Luiss University 81-41 at Stellazzurra's Arena Altero Felici. With the win, UNO capped its trip with a perfect 4-0 record against foreign competition.

Sophomore forwards Tre'Shawn Thurman and Daniel Meyer were Omaha's leading scorers with 13 points apiece. They were joined in double figures by senior guard/forward Randy Reed II, who finished with 11 points.

Junior guard Tra-Deon Hollins and freshman guard Zach Jackson matched each other with eight points, while senior forward Jake White added six. Senior guard Kyler Erickson, freshman center Zach Pirog and freshman forward Ben Kositzke had five points apiece, followed by four from freshman guard JT Gibson. Sophomore guard Devin Newsome also had three points, and senior guard Devin Patterson finished it off with two for the night.

Omaha trailed Luiss early in the opening quarter, the first and only time it fell behind over its four games this week. After Luiss went up 8-4, the Mavericks strung together a 9-0 run and finally regained the lead at 15-14. From there, UNO never looked back and took a 19-15 lead by the first break, then pushed it to 38-23 by halftime.

The third stanza was highlighted by seven points from Thurman, which made it 62-31. Omaha capped the night with a final tally of 81-41.

UNO completes its trip on Saturday, Aug. 22, when it departs Rome for a return trip to Omaha. To catch up on the team's adventures abroad, blog entries are posted on OMavs.com.
