Devin Patterson had a career day and drained the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer, giving the Omaha men's basketball team a 100-97 win over Montana State Sunday afternoon at Worthington Arena. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 4-4 (0-0 Summit League) on the season, while the Bobcats dropped to 4-4 (0-0 Big Sky).
Patterson put together his career performance with 38 points on 15-of-22 shooting with three 3-pointers and a 5-of-6 effort at the free throw line. The Portsmouth, Va., native added three rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Sophomore forward
Tre'Shawn Thurman narrowly missed a double-double, totaling 20 points and nine rebounds. The Omaha Central product shot 6-of-9 from the field and 8-of-8 at the line.
Freshman guard
Zach Jackson also finished in double figures with a season-high 14 points, shooting 4-of-7 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the foul line while adding seven rebounds, four steals and an assist. Junior guard
Tra-Deon Hollins rounded it out with 12 points, just missing a double-double of his own with nine assists, seven boards and five steals.
As a team, Omaha shot 52 percent (37-of-71) from the floor, 27 percent (4-of-15) from long range and 88 percent (22-of-25) at the line. Montana State, helped by 15 team 3-pointers, shot 52 percent (34-of-66) from the field and 67 percent (14-of-21) at the line. The Mavericks held a 36-35 advantage on the glass and finished with 13 steals to MSU's five.
Montana State was led by 32 points from Marcus Colbert, who shot 11-of-19 with five 3-pointers to pass the 1,000 career points milestone. Stephan Holm (21 points) and Tyler Hall (17 points) also scored in double figures for the Bobcats, with Holm knocking down five treys to match Colbert behind the arc.
Patterson paced Omaha early, shooting 9-of-12 for 23 points in the first 20 minutes, and with another 10 points apiece from Thurman and Jackson, the trio accounted for 43 of UNO's 59 first-half points. The Mavericks held the early lead before Montana State went up 28-27 on a Quinton Everett three, but two Patterson free throws put Omaha on top again. A 20-6 run punctuated with three straight buckets from Patterson and Hollins then built UNO's lead to 57-40 with 1:27 on the clock. A jumper by Reed was the Mavericks' last noise of the half, giving Omaha a 59-44 advantage by the intermission.
UNO's largest lead of the day came at 18:37 in the second half, with two Patterson foul shots making it 63-45. The Bobcats whittled the game to a single-digit margin and later used three straight 3-pointers by Hall, Holm and Colbert to trim it to 75-73 at 10:16. The Mavericks continued to hold MSU at bay, going up nine at 90-81 and 92-83 on two Patterson jumpers. But a three and a jumper by Hall on consecutive possessions made it a one-point contest at 96-95, and a Colbert jump shot in the lane knotted it at 97-97 with three seconds to go. After a long Maverick pass was knocked out of bounds by MSU, Omaha had the final look with 1.2 seconds left. Hollins inbounded the ball to Patterson, who drained the buzzer-beating, game-winning triple from the right corner for the 100-97 win.
