Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – Despite two players with double-doubles, the Omaha men's basketball team fell 80-73 to Eastern Michigan at Baxter Arena Tuesday night. The Mavericks are now 3-4 (0-0 Summit League), while the Eagles improve to 5-2 (0-0 MAC).
Sophomore forward
Tre'Shawn Thurman picked up his third double-double of the year with 25 points and 11 rebounds, shooting 11-of-19 from the field. Senior forward
Jake White joined him with another double-double performance – his first as a Maverick – on 14 points and 12 caroms with 5-of-10 shooting.
Senior guard
Devin Patterson rounded it out with 16 points on a trio of 3-pointers, while junior guard
Tra-Deon Hollins added six points, six rebounds, nine assists and two steals.
James Thompson IV led EMU with 16 points and 15 rebounds, shooting 8-for-13 while adding two blocks and a steal. Raven Lee added a team-leading 17 points, while Tim Bond (13), Brandon Nazione (12) and Jodan Price (10) also finished in double figures.
The Eagles capitalized on 12 turnovers in the first half, scoring 16 points off Maverick miscues in the opening 20 minutes. After a 14-14 tie at 12:21, Eastern Michigan hit back-to-back threes to take a six-point lead and never looked back. The Eagles outscored Omaha 30-11 in the final 12 minutes of the half, and sparked by a first-half double-double on 10 points and 10 rebounds from Thompson, EMU built a 42-25 by the break.
Eastern Michigan maintained its double-digit advantage until 8:30 in the second half, when two free throws by senior guard/forward
Randy Reed II cut it to 61-52. A layup from sophomore forward
Daniel Meyer then made it a seven-point game and capped a 9-1 Maverick run, which was promptly cut off by a Price 3-pointer that put the Eagles up by 10 again. Immediately after the under-four media timeout, layups from Thurman and White, along with a three by Patterson, trimmed the score to 73-64 with 2:29 left. Reed then buried a jumper to pull Omaha within six at 73-67 with two minutes to go, but it was not enough, as the Eagles held on for an 80-73 win.
As a team, Omaha shot 37 percent (26-of-70) from the floor, including 24 percent (4-of-17) from long range, with a 68 percent (17-of-25) showing at the line. Eastern Michigan finished at 39 percent (27-of-69) from the field and 36 percent (8-of-22) behind the arc, as well as 67 percent (18-of-27) from the foul line. The Mavericks held the rebounding edge, 48-40.
