Omaha Sweeps SDSU for Sixth Straight Win

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha volleyball team registered its sixth sweep of the season for its sixth consecutive win Friday evening, defeating South Dakota State 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-11) at Sapp Fieldhouse. With the win, the Mavericks improve to 15-11 (10-3 Summit League), while the Jackrabbits drop to 4-25 (3-10 Summit League).

Sophomore setter Sydney O'Shaughnessy nabbed her team-leading 18th double-double of the year, delivering 38 assists and 10 digs with four kills, an ace and a block. Senior middle blocker Amy Taylor paced the Mavericks with 10 kills on 15 errorless swings for a .667 hitting percentage, also adding three digs and a block.

Senior middle blocker Megan Schmale was close behind with nine kills as well as four digs and a team-best three blocks. One of Schmale's blocks was a solo stop, while the other two were assisted blocks, bringing her career total to 430 block assists, which ranks third in school history. Schmale sits just five block assists behind Kathy Knudsen, who had 435 from 1982-85, and six behind school record-holder Ruth Evans, who had 436 from 1985-88.

Sophomore outside hitter Mackenzie Horkey chipped in eight kills and eight digs, and senior rightside hitter Michaela Schimmer added seven kills for the night.

The Mavericks shined again defensively behind senior libero Kimberly Bailey, who had 22 digs along with a team-high three aces, and freshman defensive specialist Jessica Plake, who had 10 digs. Bailey's effort marked her 11th match this season with 20 or more digs and her third straight such performance. The Lincoln, Neb., native moved up to sole possession of seventh on the UNO career digs chart, as she now owns 1,460 over four seasons.

As a team, Omaha powered the victory with a season-high .333 attack percentage to South Dakota State's .113, outblocked the Jacks 4-0 and outdug them 62-42. SDSU was led by eight kills apiece from Ashley Beaner and Mikala Hora.

UNO's offense came through in a big way in the first set, as the Mavericks hit .400 as a team to SDSU's .057 with the help of four kills from Horkey and three apiece from Schmale and Schimmer. Spurred by four straight opening kills from Taylor, Schimmer and Gdowski, Omaha created a 5-0 lead before a Jackrabbit timeout. The Mavs took off from there, extending their lead to 15-5 before a second break taken by the Jacks. Late in the set, UNO put together a 4-0 run with two SDSU errors, a Horkey kill and a Bailey ace to shoot ahead 23-10. A Schimmer kill brought it to game point at 24-11, and two plays later, a Jackrabbit attack error closed the set at 25-12.

Game two was decidedly closer with eight tied scores and three lead changes, with SDSU hitting .108 and UNO cooling off to a .103 clip. The Jackrabbits took an early lead before Omaha knotted it at 7-7 with a Schmale kill. Continuing to trade points, the Mavericks broke past a late 18-18 tie and jumped ahead 20-18 with back-to-back Taylor kills and a South Dakota State attack error. The Jacks then managed to stall the game one final time at 21-21, but UNO in turn rattled off four straight points. The run was started with a Gdowski kill and a Plake ace, and following an SDSU timeout, a Schmale kill and a Schmale/Gdowski block gave Omaha the win at 25-21 for a 2-0 advantage.

The Mavericks mustered a .548 team attack percentage in the third game with the help of five kills from Taylor, who had no errors and finished with a .714 hitting efficiency for the set. The Mavericks went up 4-0 to start, but the Jackrabbits pulled close and knotted it at 6-6. It proved their only threat, as Omaha strung together a 10-2 run to push ahead 16-8. UNO doubled the lead once more at 18-9 on a Bailey ace and again at 20-10 with a Schimmer kill. After an O'Shaughnessy kill and an ace from Plake, the Jacks made their final tally with a kill by Wagner Larson. Senior middle blocker Diane Banderas then hammered back-to-back kills and Gdowski put up one last ace, sealing Omaha's set win at 25-11 and the match sweep.

UNO returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 10, hosting Oral Roberts for the Mavericks' final home match of the season. The contest is set for 7 p.m. at Baxter Arena, and links to live stats and video will be available on OMavs.com.
